In 1970 I took the "3130" from Sydney to Melbourne then another "steamer" from Melbourne to Uluru(Alice Springs-not directly to).
LOVED the slow travel and the relaxing ride to the "outback". It was winter(May), just before the Queen's birthday, and the mountains had snow, the tea was great and the people were fantastic!

Beautiful mate!
Is it actively "in service"?

Not as a scheduled main-line loco Dan.
Heritage locos are only used (apart from one example in Scotland - the "Jacobite") to haul special (usually one-day) excursions. The complications of coaling and watering them mean that it is difficult to fit them into the normal traffic flow.
I am fortunate that the West of England main line (which is used by many of these excursions) runs just a couple of fields away from our house.

Yes that is the "program" here also John.
I wish it "wasn't so" but progress , and people's wish to get to somewhere as fast as possible, has ruined American passenger rail service in the States.
Thanks for the info!
