What's in the future for the Sony A7Cr II?

p.1 #1 · What's in the future for the Sony A7Cr II?

I know that the not all of the reviews are even out yet for the latest camera.

But I was thinking that it could be fun to speculate, or suggest if someone from Sony is reading this, any improvements that we would like to see for the next version of the A7Cr.

The sensor gains that we have been seeing, like higher dynamic range and ISO performance are of course a given and it's also the increase in the number of autofocus points, real-time AF and pre-capture.

Body-wise, I would like to see the implementation of the new and better battery, which would increase the size of the grip a little bit. I hope they keep the same overall size.

I would like to see the implementation of this screen also ported to the A7Cr.

A viewfinder there that it's a little bit bigger and with better resolution would help but it's not a deal breaker for me.

Buttons are a little bit moushy and I would like to see that updated as well.

What you guys have in mind?

If they really want to keep it small the current battery would be used. Does a CrII need the 30 FPS and CFe?
It could take 3-4 years to replace all models with the new batteries, so I'm not sure they will universally.

Drop the price by $1000 with minor improvements would be enough for me.

To me, the C-line body needs a joystick, 4-axis flip screen, and better EVF to become attractive. Illuminated buttons would be a nice bonus.

Features nice to have but aren't dealbreakers for me: dedicated white balance sensor, CFe A slot, and mechanical front curtain (was a dealbreaker to a7CR, but if CR II uses the 66.8 MP sensor, ES will be tolerable).

Aesthetically, it'll be cool to have a white version.

I don't think they'll improve the EVF, the LCD, buttons or pads -- then there is little reason to buy the more expensive a7R VI. I'm not sure they will actually update all models with the newer battery, at least not the more compact models.

Yep, no need for the 30fps nor the CFe.

It needs to be a big update for me to upgrade, otherwise I'm happy to hang onto the a7cii.

I'd like it to be 1cm thinner, can be a little taller but I'm also happy to keep using the bottom plate from an L-bracket.
If they can get it in there then a larger lcd with higher density and to flip up smoothly without having to go to the side.
More natural colours and improved profiles.
Focus confirmation with manual focus lenses.
The ISO wheel skips randomly, I have to disable it else it switches from auto.
Higher resolution evf, bit bigger, with something to easily attach to block sunlight if needed.
Would be great to solve efcs issues, higher mechanical shutter speed.
Better battery life.
More premium feeling build, less like it's made of recyclable goods.
No crop 4k.

It could be the a7ciii changes and it wouldn't change much on my end.
It's the only stuff I really care about at the moment, more resolution isn't something I personally need.
I expect I won't get much of anything I actually want and they'll just upgrade the sensors 🤷‍♂️

With other high-end gadgets, we get more without the size increasing, usually it decreases.
With cameras I feel like they keep just getting bigger. Are we heading back to DSLR sizes?

Just make either the EVF or the screen usable at day time, even at the cost of removing one of them, with whatever other downgrade required, shorter battery life for example.

I bought the A7Cii again recently, just to find that it's still such a pain to frame for my eyes; thinking of selling it again.

I'll probably get an A7C3 when available as my next camera after A7C2. I would expect the A7V sensor and in general most new features from A7V including the improved battery efficiency. I would welcome EVF improvements such as bigger panel and/or higher magnification if they can do it without a noticeable negative size impact + better screen but I don't really need a 4-way tilting screen esp. if it protrudes more. I'd prefer the same current battery since it's already fine and I have a few of those. Removing the EVF would be a very bad idea and would stop me from getting the camera.

I'd like a "joystick" like the other A7 series have in place of the AF-ON button. A feature that would allow registering names / FL / aperture info etc. for adapted lenses would be nice. Manual focusing aids like Canon and Nikon have as an addition to focus peaking and magnification would be interesting though I'm not really expecting much focus on adapted / manual focus lens supporting features at this point.

It would be very important to keep the size and weight very close to current C models and if it could be made even smaller/lighter without compromising anything important like IBIS it would be a nice bonus.

A joystick button would be a major functionality upgrade for me. That was one of my main frustrations with the A7Cr.

2.3M dot tilting screen, 3.6M dot EVF, new sensor, joystick instead the wheel. 28 1.8G and 50 1.8G lens in size and optical performance of 20 1.8G.
Just kidding, Leica pay a decent amount for Sony not cannibalising Q3.

Each of us compromise to get what we want. I sold my A7Rv to get the small form factor of the A7CR, but regretted the choice. I really couldn’t get over the ten year old EVF tech when compared with the A7Rv. This time around, I sold the A7CR and put an order in for the A7Rvi. A sufficiently improved EVF is unlikely. For everyone’s sake, I hope that I’m wrong.
