p.1 #1 · Question re: accessories and body protection for my first Leica purchase

Greetings FM Leica community! As you may have seen in my Q3 Monochrom thread, I'm pretty set to buy one as my niche-use camera. I am fully into the Canon R5ii ecosystem for all my other needs, I specifically am interested in the Q3M specifically for what it does, limitations and all. As this will be my first foray into the world of Leica, I had some questions and am seeking advice.

I understand the anodized paint on metal will rub off over time. This pains me as I take care of my gear (whenever I trade up my Canon gear, it's almost always rated as Like New Minus even if I've used it a lot for several years). Now taking care of my gear isn't about trying to get the most resale value possible (though it's a nice side benefit). I've just been very fastidious since I was a kid and I like to take care of my things. But I also understand that with the all metal body and anodized paint, wear and tear will happen, even from just taking it out of a bag repeatedly over the years.

So my first question is: Do you have any advice on body protection? Or is wear and tear on a Leica akin to how chefs treat all-copper cookware that develops patina over time (e.g. wear and tear is part of the charm)? If you do use body protection, especially if you're a Q3 owner, I'd appreciate any recommendations. If you are in the "let it show that it's been lovingly used over the years" camp, happy to have that feedback as well. Since I take care of my things, knock on wood, my wear would mostly be the finish coming off from regular contact of being pulled in/out of a nice camera bag, and maybe any repeated contact/rubbing points with a strap.

My second question is about accessories.

1. I think I'm pretty set on getting the official hand grip with wireless charging from Leica. I tried it in-store and since I'm used to the ergonomics of Canon, the grip brings it closer to that and makes it more comfortable for me to shoot. I already have a Qi charging base for my phone which I understand this grip will also work with for wireless charging (that's what the CSR told me). Happy to entertain alternatives, as I know there are 3rd party offerings but none I could find that also do the wireless charging.

2. Thumb grip (and lens hood) - I also very much like the Leica thumb grip as, in combination with the hand grip, made the Q3 feel totally at home in my hand. However I don't relish paying the Leica tax for this one. I'm seriously looking at the Freewell thumb grip. It seems to get very good reviews, and at least retains a cold shoe functionality rather than eliminating it. Also considering if I should potentially get the Grip+Lens Hood combo. Thoughts on either?

3. Bag recommendations. Since my Canon rig is somewhat extensive, I have medium-to-large bags. I'd love a recommendation for something that would carry only the Q3M+strap (with a little extra room for attached grip and lens hood), an extra battery, and a filter or two. Preferably under $150. Weather resistant would be preferred, and a gentle lining on the inside in case I decide to not go with body protection. Open to sling or holster type bags, ideally well under 10L (that's my smallest bag right now). Goal is to travel as light as possible while still offering decent protection, but no need to cram a lot of accessories, just mostly the camera and extra battery. Peak Design Sling 3L piqued (pun intended) my interest but not sure if it's too small. Wandrd I think has a sling in 4L too.

4. High quality UV filter (for protection). And no I don't use one on my L lenses, but as part of Canon's CPS, if I ever do damage the front element the repair charge is considerably less than if I have to send the entire Q3M in (I've seen testimonials that Leica repair costs can be a lot higher). So given that, this will probably be the first time I have one on all the time, so I'd appreciate any recommendations. I see Leica sells one for $160 which is the most I'd want to pay for one, but open to other less expensive options if they optically perform as well.

5. Extra battery and strap - I always buy a 2nd battery (official first party), and I'm in the PD strap ecosystem, so an easy solution would be for me to get a second pair of their attachments and use one of my existing PD straps.

6. Wrist strap - one of the other things I've never bought, but might find useful for the Q3M because it's small, is a wrist strap. Does anyone use this instead of a neck strap? How do you like it, and what brand/model do you use?

That's all that I can think of, but feel free to add your favorite essential accessory.

Thanks in advance!

Oh, I also am seeing some people use LCD protection film. I have never put LCD protection on my Canon LCDs (and I use them a lot) and have never had an issue. Are Leica LCD coatings less durable and prone to scratching? I saw one Q3 owner say they used an LCD protective film but then also his camera tended to get very warm which resulted in that film starting to lift off.

All I ever added to my Q's is a RRS L-bracket with grip. This adds a bit of protection of the lower end of the camera that usually sees the most dings and scratches when setting it down on rough surfaces like concrete or masonry. Other than that, you can certainly add a half grip. I never installed a screen protector or a lens filter and never had any issues. Some people like to install body and lens skins, which I personally would avoid.

It's really up to you.

I think honest wear doesn't generally degrade the value of a Leica. Abuse-wear does though. The finish is quite tough, so if it only ever goes in and out of a camera bag, it will stay as new, but if you shoot 50k shots over two decades, then the edges will wear some, which is a badge of honour. Some of the most expensive Leicas to be had are brassed, black paint bodies.

Thanks for this! Yeah one of the reasons I liked the OEM grip is that the bottom does seem to fully protect while also allowing the wireless charging. Good to know about the lack of screen protector not presenting a problem with your LCD. Hopefully they (the camera makers) are all using the same/similar glass on it. The LCD on my Canons (even the previous gens) never really scratched or scuffed without one (when subjected to normal use, I would expect if I dropped or banged it on something that damage would result).

Thanks for this, and for the examples. Yes I can imagine how often I envision using this that "honest wear" will be the result, as I said I take good care of my gear. I am curious how long it takes to actually happen. If it's over a period of years, that's perfectly acceptable to me. I was just worried that it might start sooner than expected. But I'm not super keen on body/lens skins as gregfountain mentioned some people use, so it looks like I'm going to just let it show honest wear.

Just remembered that I have an extra Lim's Q3 case in Black (sold my Q3 and kept my Q343) and also a black thumb support that is the same as the Leica one with 2 buttons, but costs fractions. The Lim half case has a built-in grip and also Arca-Swiss rails on the bottom. This protects the body really well and gives a firm support.
If you have interest I could ship both items to you for $125.

p.1 #7 · Question re: accessories and body protection for my first Leica purchase

Okay I think I have my "starter pack" picked out.

1. Freewell thumb grip - 1/5 the cost, highly reviewed, allows cold shoe functionality (already ordered, on the way from Amazon)

2. Leica hand grip with wireless charging capability - along with the thumb grip, this makes the Q3M feel most comfortable in my hand (will buy in-store with camera)

3a. Extra battery (official Leica, will buy in-store with camera)

3b. Dual battery charger - debating this, curious if it's much faster than charging through the camera via USB-C? I know it will be faster than wireless charging, but my R5mk2 charges batteries internally via USB-C faster than the Canon official charger. If this is the case with Leica, I may just go with internal USB-C for fast charging, and wireless charging for overnight charging.

4. Trip to Samy's Camera and Peak Design stores to pick out a 3L-4L bag and possibly a wrist strap (I already am in the PD strap ecosystem so I'll need another pair of connectors).

Future possible purchases (unless someone posts a good rationale to make it a day 1 purchase)

1. Filters - I just want to shoot with the camera "plain" before experimenting with filters

2. UV filter - seems many are shooting without "protection" and haven't had issues with the lens scratching. I plan on keeping the lens hood on the majority of the time, and the lens cap on when I'm not shooting.

3. LCD protective film - as with the UV filter, most say they don't have an LCD protective film, and that the LCD has survived just fine.

4. Any kind of body/lens skins - I'm going to let the camera show "honest wear" over time. I take good care of my stuff but if the anodized paint starts to wear over years of use, then that's just going to be how it is.

5. Soft release button - I gotta admit the first party ones look cool, but I don't know if it's $75 cool The cheap ones on Amazon look...cheap.

Anything other advice people would like to share as I approach less than 2 days away from joining the Leica family?

I'd wait on the dual charger until the Q3M becomes your daily driver and replaces the Canon system.

Not sure about Leica but other dual chargers I've used have either been sequential (charges one battery then the next) or aren't all that fast.

Get a feel of how the Q works for you in the field, but if you find that the battery drains faster than expected, you could top it up while out from a PD capable USB battery.

With my M cameras I found the thumb grip to be indispensable for maintaining a secure grip on the camera. I'm guessing the Qs are the same. I'd experiment with using just the thumb grip as you may find you don't really need the Leica hand grip. Also, for my M I added an RRS L-bracket without the hand grip portion. I found it added just enough height to the camera to make it more comfortable for my hand size to hold.

Arca Swiss compatible L-bracket and a wrist strap. Leica makes tough cameras, also; you don't own it 'til you scratch it.

Ooh great advice about the thumbgrip first. Glad I ordered it from Amazon and it should arrive tomorrow. I can take it into the store with me and attach it right away and see if I can get by without dropping another $250 on the handgrip. The one bonus to the handgrip is it also acts as a protector for the bottom of the camera, and I think one reviewer said because of it's weight, it actually makes the camera sit up properly on it so that it doesn't tilt forward and have the bottom of the lens touch a surface. I didn't pay attention to the balance while I was in the store, but I feel like he laid it down on the table and I don't recall the Q3M nosing down. Maybe the reviewer was talking about the Q3 43 which has a bigger lens?

With regards to the battery and the daily driver joke...honestly if I love the Q3M as much as I think I will, it's likely going to be my daily driver "for regular life stuff". Which is to say the majority of the time. The Canon comes out for special occasions--which in fairness I do a decent amount of. I usually don't go two weekends without bringing it out and shooting something special (for example this weekend my friend's daughter is competing in a soccer tournament so I'll be shooting that with my 100-500L and 70-200L with high speed burst shooting and Action Priority soccer with her face programmed into the R5mk2). But for when I'm just riding/walking around town, hanging out with friends? It's gonna be the Q3M.

I think Leica claims their dual charger simultaneously charges, but I'll confirm. Unless they offer me some kind of package deal discount (doubt it) there's no pressure for me to pick up the extra battery and charger on the spot. If they do offer a discount, that's another matter...

Ooh let me look into that. I do have a mix of Arca Swiss head tripods and the older (Manfrotto?) Quick Release heads.

Actually I need to go through my cabinet of "random camera peripherals"...I think when I got my R5ii I bought a PD wrist strap but then because that camera was so bulky just decided to go with a standard strap. I can't recall if I returned the wrist strap or just kept it. If I kept it, then that solves my wrist strap problem.

I don't ever recall reading comments here where someone negotiated a discount from a Leica Store. This could be a first. Please let us know!

The only discounts I ever got were because I bought demo lenses. Not the lenses on display, but 'refurbished' and properly repackaged lenses a Leica Store happened to have in stock. That's also how I bought my M240. And also how I buy most of my Apple products.

Look into an Arca Swiss baseplate as suggested in the earlier threads. I didn't think I'd shoot from a tripod much with my M but for a while it was my primary landscape camera regularly mounted on one.

Yeah I wouldn't expect to get a discount. I imagine Leica are like Rolex. If you want one, you pay sticker (and in some cases for Rolex, I hear, more than sticker).

Since I'm planning on the Q3M to be my everyday light carry, I really doubt I'll carry a tripod. If I ever do, it won't be one of my heavier duty ones, but rather the light carbon fiber tripod one from Peak Design I have. That one uses their attachment which can screw on the underneath of the wireless charging hand grip?

Hilariously, I found the box for the Peak Design Clutch (wrist strap) in one of my cupboards, but the strap wasn't in it. So at least I know it's somewhere in my house. I also found another 512GB v90 SDXC UHSII card--it was part of a shipment of three "apology/warranty" replacements when the 256GB v60 cards proved to be incompatible with the then-new R5mk2, and when I returned them for warranty, it took many months but when they finally shipped me replacements, they swapped the three 256GB v60 cards with 512GB v90. So now I'll have two of them ready to go for the Q3M!
