Sony A1 questions

p.1 #1 · Sony A1 questions

Hello - I have a couple niche-y questions about the a1 as I consider buying one...
- On my a7rV, I can continue to operate more camera settings (view photos, change to crop mode, etc.) while the camera is buffering, while on the a9 and a9II I know those same settings are locked out (i.e. I can't change to crop mode). I believe the a1 (first gen) is more like the a7rV in this regard, but can anyone confirm?

- I recently borrowed a friend's a1 II, and the mechanical shutter is incredibly quiet compared to the a7rv/a9ii/etc...Does the a1 first gen have the same (quiet) sound?

Thank you!

I can't answer the buffering question since it is something i never do. I shoot mine on silent, and I hear nothing at all.

It does. Just know that the A1 (I and II) does NOT have a full mechanical shutter like on your A7RV. It's an electronic first curtain with mechanical second curtain.

Regarding the buffering, let me report back in a bit. I've honestly never even thought to check.

Thanks for the insight! I the primary reason the buffering behaviour is something I use when I'm shooting sports from a long way (runners far away, group of soccer players) and I can punch into crop mode to land focus on the specific player. Thanks!

I just checked. Yes, I am able to change from Full frame to APSC while the camera is writing to the cards. Happy to check on any other questions you might have. The A1 is a beast. I confess...I'm interested in seeing what Sony has up its sleeve next week for the A7R VI.

It just occurred to me that it might be an CF Express vs SD card thing. I'm using CF express and no issues.

Both the A1 and A1II have the same shutter. It is a very pleasant and quiet sound. I’m nearly always in electronic shutter though

Thank you for this comment, it is so kind! My day job actually relocated and we decided not to move, so I'm in a severance period (and unemployed), and trying to pick up as much photography work as possible, which at this point is sports, since my preferred landscape doesn't pay I appreciate it very much.
