p.1 #1 · Leave canon ? Sony or nikon?.

have canon EF gear ; 1dx2 , canon 600 is 2 , 400 do and 180 mm
I was inactive for many years and now i m planning to be take photos again , at some point i will get mirrorless systems sure ( may be in 1-2 years ), so the question is after leaving dslr system , should i go another brand or staying on canon with EF/RF converter ?
also is the lag of canon at producing tele lenses behind nikon sony means anything as may be canon will give priority to cine systems ...

If you think that the gear is limiting you, you either are at the top of the profession... or the problem lies with you.

For me the choice of camera system has always been more about ergonomics than lenses. If you were happy with Canon just stay with them. You know the ergonomics, the menus, the settings, the way to get what you need out of the CRWs.

Not to mention that that the 400/4 and 600/4 will be a pretty penny to replace on any system (easily in excess of $15k even if buying used) and you can likely run it on an adapter on a Canon ML body.

Normally, in many cases I would agree with this. There’s a whole lot of brand-chasing going on that doesn’t really improve anyone’s photography.

On the other hand, the fact that Canon changed its mount system when moving to the R system means that for many of us who are still using EF lenses and older Canon DSLR and approaching the time when a normal upgrade is in order… the world of potential choices became larger.

In the EF era, it almost always just made sense to keep using the lenses we had and occasionally upgrade to a newer Canon body. But now, when sticking with Canon likely means upgrading all or many lenses to RF, the cost delta between sticking with Canon and considering other options is smaller.

For many it comes down to finances but not certain where you might fit in that scenario. If you are getting back into photography and will be shooting the same venues you did in the past then I'd spend sometime with your current gear to determine if it still gets the job done. Dan makes a good point that the decision gap between staying with Canon or going with another system has shrunk. Obviously staying with Canon can soften the initial hit on the wallet since only a body and adapter would be required. At some point afterwards the replacement with RF mount lenses will require another cash outlay. FYI: the longer you wait the less money you will recoup from the sale of EF lens.

I'd rent a sony and a nikon and try them. I bought a sony when canon had yet to move to mirrorless as I wanted mirrorless. I had a hard time with the menu and controls. Ended up and went back to Canon. My biggest problem with Canon is their lens selection and blocking 3rd party lenses. Sony I'm told has improved their menu. Stupid stuff like 70-200 that wont take multipliers as well as the 200-800 and 100-300 2,8 that takes a giant very expensive filters instead of drop in like the other big whites. The R5 without built in GPS like the 5D4. Seems like they are going backwards. I know people who moved from Nikon to sony. As I said I'd rent the other systems and try them first. As to EF lenses, they work great with the converters. I really like the one with drop in filters to work with my fast wide angles which either don't take filters or require monster adapters. They would help spread the cost in converting to the RF system.

If you can handle the weight, the IS II lenses are still first rate on the newer bodies.
My 500/4 IS II on the R5 II is my favorite, usually with the 1.4x III.

Ditto for Nikon. The 500/4 FL was beautiful on the Z8 naked (FTZ only), with a 1.4TC and 1.7TC. Can be had in excellent condition for under $3k. The only reason I sold it was the weight.

Now days just about every camera made by the popular camera manufacturers takes great photos. My decision to go with Canon the last time that I changed brands was because the Canon Pro camera fit my hands and me better than the Nikon, Fuji, and Sony did, and since all offered nearly the same features in pro cameras, I based my decision more on how the camera fit my hand, had the controls in the right places, etc. Canon mirrorless became available, but not that popular yet, when I made my final decision and invested in 3 Canon DSLR Cameras. So with that much money already spent on cameras and lenses, I wasn't able to just jump into Canon Mirrorless. The DSLR cameras that I have are doing what I need, and it will be another 4 years or more before I invest heavily into new cameras again, if ever. I'm 84, so this is also weighing heavy on my decision. Why should I buy the latest, when what I have is still relatively new and does what I need?
