I have 5 grand to spend, give or take. What camera and lens would you recommend for wildlife and dog shows ring side? In the past, I have used the Sony A1, and several higher end Canon DSLRs. Don't want to spend $$ for an A1ii.
Thanks in advance

Just use your A1 and add a long lens if you don't have one. The Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G is extremely popular and produces quality images. I'm not fond of it for hand held shooting as it's quite front heavy yet on a tripod or monopod it's fine.

Yes, I shoot handheld, and I had this lens, and the 100-400GM. The 200-600 was too heavy for me to shoot nice sharp shots handheld

But, I sold all that gear, so I am sorta starting over. Just thought I would put the question out there rather than jumping back into the Sony ecosystem

All of today's cameras are quite good. If you want to shoot action, then you want mid teer and up. The ergonomics are the main difrinciators as well as the way you set the camera up. If you want to stay light and have a quality camera, the OM-1 II is great and you can start off with the rather light 100-400mm. You might find the DOF a bit two wide on that lens. The 300mm f4 is a super lens and it takes the 1.4x TC quite well. This might be the best bargin. There are some very light Canon lenses as well. I shoot Fuji using the X-H2s and there 500mm f5.6. I love this reasonably light and very fast combination.

I'd throw in a suggestion for the A7v for the addition of recapture - not as high megapixels but otherwise excellent and paired with the Sony 200-600mm G will give you an amazing kit. Less than $4000 used for both.

Do you have anybody that you could share lenses with? Buy into the same system and this will greatly reduce your starting cost out of the gate.

I have more experience with Canon, but if it were me with your interests, I would try to start with a R5 II and maybe some used EF lenses to get you going.
