I recently came across a very intriguing copy of the Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar 70-210mm f/3.5 T AEG (C/Y mount)* and I’m seeking some collective wisdom from the Zeiss historians here.
As we know, the mass production of this lens (released around 1978) typically starts in the 58xxxxx range (West Germany). However, this specific unit carries a serial number in the 259xxxx block.
According to the Thiele records, the 2.5 million serial block belongs to the late 60s/early 70s, which predates the official release of this lens by nearly a decade. This suggests it might be a pre-production sample, a prototype, or a special professional trial unit issued by the Oberkochen factory.
Background of this lens:
I acquired this from the estate of a professional photojournalist (formerly based in Toronto and Poland) who supposedly received it directly for field testing during the late 70s.
Physical Observations:
Condition: Near Mint. No lens creep (the zoom action is exceptionally firm/tight).
Optics: Perfectly clear, no signs of cleaning marks or internal dust.
Markings: Standard "Lens made in West Germany" and "T*" markings, but the font engraving on the front ring seems exceptionally crisp compared to later 60xxxxx units I’ve seen.
I have already reached out to the ZEISS Corporate Archives for verification, but I would love to hear if anyone in this community has ever encountered a "25-series" serial number for this specific VS 70-210mm, or if there are any known records of "out-of-range" serials being used for press-evaluation units.
Any insights on the historical significance or rarity of this serial block would be greatly appreciated!
That lens, based on the serial number, is more than likely part of a batch of experimental lenses designed by Dr. Glatzel. I thought that the serial number range was familiar, and I managed to dig up some info!
First, pictures of the Distagon 18/2.8 in C/Y mount, with a serial number in the 2,59x,xxx range, as well as a Distagon 25/1.4 in C/Y mount without a serial number: https://imgur.com/a/lenses-kJNxI#0
wanna ask if it is experimental lense designed by DR. Glatzel. How can I got 4 same lens and the serial number was super similar, all 2598xxx or2899xxx
