Seven years ago this October, I sent an rII off to Daniel at Monochrome Imaging and he sent it back stripped off all sensor toppings, including the CFA. It's been my daily carry since and has gone around the world with me. It's been the best partner and a lot of fun. I have great lenses for it (mostly a mixture of Minolta SR and Zeiss RF lenses) and filter solutions which help me make the most of both visible spectrum mono and IR. After selling a handful of Rodenstocks, I'm thinking I should put part of the money toward getting a newer model to take the rII's place.
I'm sticking with Sony for this as I have no interest in trying to recreate my adapter set up in a new mount. My primary goal is an EFV upgrade, secondary is getting the 100 battery to match my A1 and 6700, tertiary is a manageable silent shutter. I also haven't used my rII in a way that would create a problem with the IR timing light in the newer models, so I don't see that as a concern. I see my options as follows:
a7rIII- cheapest option, uses the right battery, needs the "a" model for an LCD upgrade, tried and true sensor, I can work with the silent shutter, but not much of an EVF upgrade.
a7rIV- also not vastly expensive, uses the right battery, I think I may need the "a" model here for the better LCD as well, decent EVF upgrade, but I had a hard time working with the sensor as a silent shutter. Perhaps things will be different in this configuration, but I'm not getting my hopes up.
a7rV- for my uses, it's an rIV with a great LCD (that will mostly go unused to its full potential) and the best EVF, but there are still questions about the sensor.
a1- ticks all the boxes and, honestly, would be my default, but I think I might be a pioneer here. I can't find of anyone else having this type of surgery done on an a1. Still, right now, it feels like the right answer. I love my existing a1, and I'd love to have some of its capabilities in the monochrome. I think it might be worth it.
Any suggestions? And, please remember when answering, any questions I had about the usefulness of such a camera were answered over six years ago. It's going to happen. I'm just trying to decide on the camera.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Brad,
I think the answer is pretty straightforward. You use this camera a lot and you want an EVF upgrade, so for me that points to either the A7r V or the A1 as the EVF in those cameras is a genuine upgrade and really nice. Whether you go with the 7r V or the 1 is really about whether you will use the silent electronic shutter. The A7r V is a wonderful camera if you can use the mechanical shutter for all or almost all your shooting. I almost modified mine but went a different way to get better focus aids for manual focus. If you use the electronic shutter, however, that is a big weak point of the A7r V, and I would go with the A1. You can get them used now for a fairly reasonable price and it is still a great camera.
