Same as others..
I never use it either. Instead use the exp comp.
But then I have everything switched off. It’s all just too gimmicky for me. Reminds me of the silly icons on the PASM dial. Flower, Running guy, Mountain range etc etc
I’ve never once trusted any of these so have never once used them.
We only need the triangle (shutter/aperture/iso) plus maybe exp/comp??
Even AF is a luxury we all now take for granted.
I tried it for a quite some time when it came out on the 1D MarK III.
Honestly, it never really did much for me. I got used to instead just checking blinkies and adjusting on my own.
Funny thing is, it came out back when ETTR/HAMSTTR were still popular, (maybe required) to limit/reduce noise, so you were pulling your exposures in two different directions with HTP.
I've been using it for a few years with mirrorless. I've done a lot of experimenting over the last year with the R1 and R52. I've been testing in real world situations, from weddings, to all of the wildlife trips i lead around the world. I've found D+2 is too much and can make the raw files look a little weird.
Yes it is a safety net of sorts, but i shoot auto iso and some times light and situations change fast.

Interesting that Janine at Pangolin recommended this. Do you know if she has it a) baked into all her custom configs, b) baked into one custom config or c) has a back button configured for "emergency" activation of it regardless of what custom configs or general settings she is using? Does she use it for all her shooting or just very selectively?
Same questions for you Alan. And when you say "I use it all the time", is that a broad statement or do you literally use it for all photography (or all wildlife photography)? Do you shoot RAW or cRAW? Do you shoot electronic shutter or mechanical? both of these points have been raised as issues/concerns (shooting cRAW and/or electronic shutter). Do you notice an increase in noise in the shadows and mid tones?
Well, I can't answer for Janine, but she is the one who brought it to my attention. I currently have it on D+2 and stored in my custome settings. I am often shooting dogs in harsh light and as I pan to follow the dog in and out of shadows, seems to keep the highlights under control. For stuff other than critters I turn it of. I shoot only RAW, and EFCS except when in pre-capture where it defaults to ES. As far as noise, I don't really notice it as I batch run through DxO PR when importing into LrC.
Here, when using evaluative metering (spot AF on the Dog's black area) with out the HTP the area through the fence behind the dog would be blown out. HTP prevented that. Yeah I know I could go into manual or use EC but I shoot in Shutter Priority with auto ISO 99% of the time. Hope this makes sense.
(I am a lazy Photographer and generally concentrate on framing and let the camera make the decisions as to exposure, ISO etc. I tend to get more keepers that way, and I suspect the camera is smarter than I am anyway.) Coco 4 by Alan Kefauver, on Flickr
pps: Most of my dog shots are throw aways and just for practice. I sit on the porch at cocktail hour almost every day when the eather is good, with a drink and a cigar and try various lens combos and camera settings on dogs and birds. (Pre-Safari practice.)
