p.1 #1 · Video settings - which picture style / picture profile / color grading ?
Hello all,
I just switch from a Sony A7III to a Canon R6 III. One of the reason was to achieve more pleasant skin tones in video.
On the Sony A7 III , I used a "Cine4" picture profile which has a minimum Iso of 200. So, more easier to switch from video to photo compared to a log profile.
What are your experiences to achieve the best results in video keeping in mind that the goal in to switch regularly between video and photo?
I list the scenarios that I have in mind :
1. Clog2 / CInema Gamut -> minimun Iso 800. So a ND filter filtering is mandatory : which strength do you use ( a variable from 2 to 5 is enough for daylight?) ? How do you switch to photo? You remove the ND or you keep it even if the ISO is higher? . How do you expose the footage?
2. Canon 709 / BT 709 -> Minimun iso 400. I'm not sure to understand the difference with the neutral picture style. Any idea. In which cases would you use this profile?
3. Picture style "Neutral" -> Minimum iso 100. Do you use a lut to color grade or do you leave the footage as is?
4. Picture style "faithful" -> Minimum iso 100. It seems that some people use this setting without any modification. Do you have any examples or feedbacks?
5. Other?
- In terms of "look" , I'm not searching for films look . The looks that I like the most are generally found in the advertised LUTs for wedding. For examples : Le Reve LUTS or EmmaK Luts (the Bright one) on Gamut website.
I'm ok to grade the footage . But for now, I didn't the results expected. If I take the example of Le Reve Luts that I bought, it is written that they are 2 ways to apply them :
1. To put them directly on 709 footage. I quickly tried on canon 709, on neutral and on faithful footage and trying to play on the amount of cuts applied... I'm not super satisfied .
2. This method seems to be the optimized one. First apply basic corrections then a conversion Lut (log to 709 and the Baseluts from gamut seems to be the one recommended) and to finish with, apply the creative luts. Here again, I'm not super happy with the results : I don't get the soft colors, highlights are sometimes too high (even if I exposed at 0) and too contrasty : I have hard times to correct these...

I'm a hybrid shooter as well so I have to deal with the ND issue as well. I use the NISI vari-ND's (1-5 and 5-9) and when I switch to photo mode I just turn the ND to its lowest setting and shoot photos with the ND at 1 stop. It's not ideal, but there's really no other way right now unless you buy a flip out system like Howie suggested here:
As for the rest of your questions about camera profiles I won't be able to help as I shoot in log and the profiles don't affect the output. This Canon forum is unfortunately pretty dead overall especially when it comes to video, but I did start a video thread a while ago to try and invite more video discussion.
When it comes to grading the log footage, I've just found that YouTube and trial and error is your friend. I'm beginner level in Resolve but I found there's a lot you can do with just playing around with sliders and wheels. I got turned off with making videos for Youtube based on the audio copyright restrictions as I think the audio/music is just as important as the footage/edit, but now that we can make our own music with AI that might motivate me to start posting more on Youtube.
Good luck and if you know of any good Canon video forums out there where there's a lot of advanced users please let us know.
