p.1 #1 · contemplating trading A7RV for A7V

I've got a lightly used A7RV. I used it one time for a photo trip to NZ (https://brick.smugmug.com/Travel/2023-11-New-Zealand).

Beyond that, the only time I use the A7RV is once a year when I shoot the Asheville ballet dress rehearsal as favor to the artistic director (examples: https://brick.smugmug.com/Terpsicorps-Dance/2025-6-Terpsicorps/2025-8-2-Asheville-tailgate-market).

I'm wondering if I should sell the A7RV and get the A7V. Advantages are smaller easy to work with files, and I think the newest AF that would have no trouble sticking to dancers as they fly across the stage. Plus the lighting at dress rehearsal is most always low/poor, and I'm wondering if the A7V would handle low lighting better than the A7RV.

Any thoughts?

Do it! I enjoy my A7RV a lot, but prefer my A1. I'm thinking I'm going to swap the RV for a A7V as well, for the times I need a fully mechanically shutter.

I would not do that. The best thing about the a7r5 is all those megapixels that allow generous cropping. With primes, you get two lenses in one using crop mode on the fly with a fantastic 26mp image in crop mode. For instance, my 35GM acts as a full frame 35/1.4 and then a 50/2 in crop mode. I would never give that up for some very minor benefits of the a7V.

Doesn't fit my use patterns or experience so no advice based on use.. What I'd think, at this point, is the A7V is pretty new and maybe let the community get more use with it, build experience and reputation?

I have an A7Riv and don't shoot lots and lots of shots with it so file size isn't a big deal for me. Maybe more time find shooters with similar "dance" experience with either/bot cameras?

File size is hardly a big issue unless you are a wedding photographer who shoots regularly thousands of images a day. There is a sraw in A7rV which may help a little.

For me the only reason to choose A7V over A7rV is speed and pre capture (and reasonably good electronic shutter). If I would do more bird photography, I would probably buy A7V as a second Sony.

Despite high resolution A7rV is a very well liked camera. Momentarily when powering up it is a little laggy but other than that I have no complains. Resolution is not only for landscapes, it is a big advantage in general photography if you shoot with primes.

Regarding low light autofocus, both the A1, A1ii, A7V and A7RV are rated the same (-4ev with a f/2 lens).

The A9iii is the only Sony camera that does better (-5ev)

I had the A7RV, now have the A7V. The only thing I miss about the A7RV is the croppability and that's just occasional. Otherwise I feel like the A7V has suited me better as a do-everything hybrid.

IMO...

If you're shooting fast motion, like dancers, the faster sensor of the A7V might work in your favor. It also has better dynamic range than the A7RV, though at higher ISOs it might not be a huge difference. But still, it's a nice to have, especially if you're mostly shooting in dimly lit scenarios.

Also, if you plan to shoot any video, the A7V is a better choice. Not to say the A7RV takes bad video at all, but the A7V does have advantages, not only in readout speed and dynamic range, but also in its overall implementation.
