Discrepancy between R10 & R100

p.1 #1 · Discrepancy between R10 & R100

A bit of background. if you please. I've been operating cameras since my Brownie Hawkeye Flash in the 1960s. I used film until 2008. I've been using various Canon EOS bodies since the 620. My first dSLR was the 500D. I've used FF, ASPC, and APSH bodies, all with a modicum of success. I've tried mirrorless in the recent past, and didn't care much for it. That said, it is the future, and I am getting old(er), soon to be 70. The R10/100 smoke my 90D/18-135 for size and weight.

This past December, I bought an R100. Though it does most of what I want a camera to do, I find it a bit lacking. For instance, BBAF on the R100 is almost useless, the grip is too small, and the EVF is horrendous. I recently acquired an R10, which I find to be a much better match for me. I like the touch screen and the EVF is at least not horrible, and the grip is sufficient. DPAF II is nice with its animal/people/vehicle detection. Functionally, I don't see any other difference between DPAF on my R100, 90D and the R10.

My problem. In good light, even less than good, both cameras present me with a rear screen that closely approximates the final exposure. Great, that is how they work. When the light gets really low (f/6.3, 1/4, 12800), they behave way differently. The R100 rear screen shows the scene about how it appears to my eyes, and locks focus almost instantly, certainly fast enough. The R10 refuses to focus, and shows a scene that is 3 to 4 stops darker than what I see with my eyes. Why? I have played with screen brightness, exposure simulation, and AE and ME modes. Nothing. Apparently, the R100 works just fine in (crappy) light where the R10 refuses to go. I have two RF lenses, 18-4 & 55-210. Both cameras work the same with both lenses. The R100 with AF, AE and record a properly exposed photo. The R10 will not AF, shows me a severely underexposed scene, BUT IT WILL RECORD A PROPERLY EXPOSED PHOTO. Any help with what is going on here will be greatly appreciated. This problem does not appear in better light. Both cameras perform as expected.

I guess your screen performance setting is [Suppress lower frame rate]
This may affect performance in low light as follows.
Faster battery consumption
Fewer shots available
Lower image display brightness
Difficulty in autofocusing
Lower metering precision
Lower flicker detection precision
Lower subject detection precision

Besides the brownie your story pretty much mirrors my own

I have the R100 and when I discovered the R50 shared the exact same size - add on grips fit both cameras - it was a no brainer that the R50 would make most sense… and it has.

Same Cage (grip)
Same battery
Same size

Perfect combo

Well, that was easy. Problem solved. Thank you.

edit:
Sorry, I should have quoted. Post #2 solved my problem.

Thanks for that. I am glad the R50 works for you. I originally chose the R10, about a year ago. Tried it. Sold it. I bought the R100 in December and spent enough time with it to form a solid opinion. I compared the R50 and R10 on paper. The R10 won because: larger grip, proper BBAF (AF-ON) button, burst rate and depth, upgraded DPAF II (animals, etc), RAW Burst, UHS II slot, and a full mechanical shutter. So I bought it again. The extra features came at a cost I felt was worth paying. Keeping it this time.

Sidebar:
I originally planned on keeping the 90D. Not so sure after getting used to the R10. The ONLY thing 90D does that the R10 cannot: OVF. After playing with the R10, that 90D seems awfully heavy. And the 90D is worth about 3 times what I could get for the R100 on E-Bay.

It crossed my mind that the R10/100 would not fit my larger lenses. I was out with the R10/Sigma 150-600. No sweat. I carry/hold that setup by the lens, not the camera, no matter what body I am shooting.

I bought R50 and saw too late that the hot shoe didn't have the legacy contacts. Also some controls are tad different than on R6/2. So I bought R10 and feel at home, like with crop R6/2 without an IBIS.

Yeah, I forgot about the flash contacts. I use 5 EX flashes. Replacing them would have been too expensive for me.

Much like my collection of lenses, my collection of flashes is paid for. I can't afford buying stuff just to replace the perfectly good stuff I already have. I did round out my R-kit with an EL-100. A tad underpowered, but it does control 3 channels, tilts & swivels, and doesn't overwhelm whelm the R100/10 bodies. 580EX II on the R100 looks a bit silly.

The EL-100 is fabulous in my view
I picked up two used mint copies for £100 combined (lucky find) the bounce/swivel feature on such a small gun is much appreciated as is the wireless feature.

I did look to buy a 3rd EL-100 but used prices have shot up…well over £100 now just for one!! Crazy times

Amazon has the adapter to use legacy EX guns on newer R bodies. But the wait time is months not days!!

Oh, and one more thing - since Canon in their eternal wisdom decided to give us exposed sensors on this range of cameras, R10 does have a sensor cleaning and R50 does not.
