I'm hoping it's me and I am doing something wrong, maybe you can help.
I'm talking about my old 1D "Hail Mary" set up. There were a few great threads about it on POTN.*
Set up your camera for worst case action scenario, record that set up using "Register Shooting Functions" and map that to the * button. (or another button)
With this set up, you can be twiddling away on a landscape tripod shot, with the camera set to single shot AF, single frame, single AF point, stopped down to F/16 with a slow shutter speed set,. and suddenly the bird you've been trying to get a shot of for years (say an American Bittern) burst in flight out of the reeds,. No chance of getting the shot, everything is set WRONG.
UNLESS, you have * mapped to recall your registered functions. Simply point lens at bird, move thumb fro, [AF ON] to *, and suddenly the 1D3/1D4/1Dx is at full FPS, Aperture is wide open, shutter speed is as high as light allows, ISO is up to help shutter speed (can't recall if 1D4 had AUTO ISO?) AF switches to AI Servo, and ALL 45 "Ring of Fire" AF points are active and tracking to catch the action! The Hail Mary Shot.
It's still there on the R3 and R52, you can find it when you assign it to a custom button setting (I'm still using *) but, FPS will not stick, and nor will AI Servo)
If I'm in single shot AF it stays there, even with the rest of the registered functions kicking in, and the FPS stays put too.
I also can't actually find the "register shooting function" in the regular menus on these cameras.
It only seems available buried deep in the "Customize Buttons" menu itself.
Anyone know if I am missing something? Is there another place in the menus where I can tell it what to "register"
I understand that I can save custom modes, but imagine if you could have that emergency mode available by moving your AF thumb to * or similar. This was what I could do on the older 1 series. Maybe on the R3 I can? I can map the Mode "selection" to a button, but that's like 4 steps. It's just mashing a button. If the [info] feature was available in that screen to allow mapping it to ONE mode, it would serve the same function.
*PS Sadly, other than threads on the now defunct POTN, I never copied the set up instructions.

On R3, R5, R5ii etc, you can save your prefered settings on custom modes C1,C2 C3 etc. and map one of the buttons to toggle the custom modes. that way, single press of the mapped button, you are on the second custom settings. Not sure how it is on other cameras though...

Yes, heavily depend on C1,C2 & C3 for wildlife different scenarios; Map the Multi-Fn button to switch between c1,c2,c3 and use Mode button as dial button.

I see, only with the MFN button can you do it in one press, vs. setting a button to another MODE button. Nice. Now I can switch from any of the standard modes to a C Custom mode with one press!
It's still not quite as fast as the old Hail Mary on the 1 series, but it's a great solution. Now I just have to train my shutter finger to find that MFN button faster!
Thanks for your input.
I still think it's weird that Canon crippled this great feature with the R bodies.

I found that a "Reverse Hail Mary" mode is also helpful, where ISO is set to maximize image quality when the subject is not moving.
Btw, I think Sony cribbed this feature off Canon's EF bodies! On Sony you can setup almost any button, and while holding it down I set AF=ON and shutter=1/5000s aka "Hail Mary" mode. Its a separate set of settings from C1/C2/C3.
That said, with more features comes more menu complexity...

FWIW, this article describes how to set up "Register/recall shooting func" on an R3, but the same thing works on my R5II. David Bergman demonstrates how to set up "Register/recall shooting func" in " target="_blank" rel="nofollow">this video.
