My oldest NP-FZ100 were from 2017 and they worked fine 5.5 years from mfg. date compared with overlaid disharge curves of new batteries.
I'm curious to see how the practice, common for several years now due to legal regulations, of selling batteries empty rather than half-charged, will affect battery lifespan. I fear this practice will lead to a noticeably shorter lifespan.
I think Sony's reaction will be influenced by legal aspects. It wouldn't harm them to replace camera and battery on their cost but they will be careful not to give the impression that it would be their duty to do so.
These lithium batteries can do unexpected things. I actually had a case where a lithium primary cell started to burn without influence from outside. A very tackling woman solved the Problem...

They are not really empty. Below a certain voltage the BMS goes to a high impedance state so they are good for a while without charging, but it would be better if they were half charged or around that.
I don't know Sony before 2017, but Canon battery packs have been sold in a discharged state for 15+ years.
Sony told me to send the camera and the battery to Precision Camera. After a few weeks in "Engineering Delay" I finally get an email from them with an invoice for $1,119.33 that says this:
"Technician Findings:
Suggest replacement Battery
Chamber, Battery Lid, Front Grip,
Grip adhesives
Battery leaked in chamber, Grips are
peeling"
Notice the "battery leaked in chamber" part.
A few hours later, both Sony and Precision Camera claim that the battery DID NOT leak, and the damage must have come from outside.
That seems like a high cost for not really replacing anything internal. I'd probably clean it up myself and keep using it. How much is the camera worth at this point?
Yup, agree it's not worth the repair cost vs buying a replacement. I'd suggest the OP go into their profile here on FM and add Sony A9 to a watch list (at the bottom) to get notified when one becomes available in the Buy&Sell forum. BTW: it looks like there are two still available for sale right now.
