p.1 #1 · Z9 Double Image in Viewfinder?

Has anyone had an issue where the viewfinder shows a double image? I sold my Z9 yesterday, and the new owner is seeing a strange double image, but says he does not have Multiple Exposure activated. He sent me the image below which he captured with his phone showing the problem. Anything he should check?

All I can think of is check the diopter adjustment dial in case it got moved to the extreme.

I’d ask for a video showing the camera settings, diopter position etc…. Too many variables for me. I’d likely pay to have it shipped to Nikon if you can’t get it sorted. Hope you figure it out. Both of my Z9’s have been tanks so I’m assuming it’s a silly user error.

I noticed that the icons on the screen are not doubled up. Must be external to the viewfinder.

As already mentioned, since the viewfinder info appears normal, I'd suspect something related to stabilization.

For example, if they are using an adapted lens and the settings are wrong, you could get this sort of effect. Check to make sure that the stabilization settings are correct, especially if it's a lens that requires manually setting the focal length.

If we assume it's from outside, as VF info overlay looks good, shouldn't back screen show the same double image like VF does?

Thanks, everyone for the helpful suggestions. It's really hard to trouble-shoot someone's camera problems long-distance!

I think his description of the problem threw me off. He said he was "seeing a double image through the view finder", which I interpreted as an issue with the live view image, and my initial thought was the diopter setting was way off, as many have suggested.

He later sent me a photo he had taken, which I think may clear up the issue. He was using the 800mm f6.3 lens hand-held, and it looks to me like the VR was turned off, as the image shows noticeable camera movement, which looks like a double image when reviewing it on the back of the camera - what he had described as the "view finder". The image also looks to have a lot of atmospheric distortion - or he was shooting through a window. I explained all of that to him in an email, but haven't heard back yet to confirm my suspicions.

edit: I received a reply, and he got the issue(s) sorted out, although he didn'y say what specifically he had to change - but the bottom line is that he's happy with the camera now.
