https://nikonrumors.com/2026/03/24/its-official-nikon-europe-announces-an-extended-free-five-year-warranty-on-all-nikkor-z-lenses.aspx/

Purchasing a new NIKKOR Z mount lens now comes with added peace of mind, as the lens will be covered against faults that might occur within the first five years of ownership.1

The new warranty is applicable in most European countries2 and covers NIKKOR Z lenses purchased from authorised Nikon retailers, Nikon Store and Nikon Plazas in Europe.

All NIKKOR Z mount lenses are covered by the new warranty, including kit lenses and teleconverters. If a claim fulfils the conditions during the extended warranty period, the lens will be repaired free of charge by authorised Nikon technicians.

Customers simply need to register their NIKKOR Z lens product within 90 days of purchase via an easy online process and it will be covered for five years from the date of purchase.

Nikon has been designing and manufacturing NIKKOR lenses for more than 90 years, pushing innovation in optical science alongside a dedication to the highest possible quality products. This extended free warranty reflects Nikon’s confidence in the enduring quality of NIKKOR lenses.

Is this perhaps for alignment with some new EU consumer protection regulation?

The (Nikon Italy) warranty of my Z5 II has been extended from 4 to 6 years.
Why?
I imagine it’s a business strategy based on statistical data: my Z6 has been working just as well as it did on day one for 7.5 years now, and my DSLRs have never given me any trouble either. So, given the reliability of lenses and cameras, it seems like a smart business move to encourage people to buy Nikon.
Furthermore, given the remaining warranty period, the resale value becomes even more attractive if you plan to upgrade your camera in 3–4 years. The 2nd hand item will have 2-3 years of official warranty.
Well done, Nikon!

Nikon USA had the 5-year lens warranty for many years, and discontinued it in 2021.

Only on some S lenses though, at least for Z.

My original 24-70 S f/4 was on the 5 year warranty. Everything else I have is 1 year. Would love to see 5 year come back but I doubt it does with bean counting in the industry.

I had the 5-year warranty on my Z 24-70/4, 24-70/2.8, and 14-24/2.8. Plus 5 years on more than a dozen F mount lenses I had. I always thought it was nice to have the extra coverage, but in 20 + years of shooting Nikon I’ve never had a lens malfunction. Of course, I’ve done dumb destructive things that no warranty would cover, such as dropping my Nikon F 24-70/2.8 onto the sandy bottom of a canyon and trashing it, or the time when I was a Canon shooter covering a golf tournament and when I wheeled away from a stop in the golf cart the camera with 200/2.8 sitting unsafely on the passenger seat flew off and across the payment and the lens was in two pieces 🤣

Yeah, the only lenses I've ever used a warranty on were because they had an issue out of the box (brand new 100-400 S, refurbished 50 1.8 S). Knock on wood!

Thankfully, this has been standard practice for years here in Germany at Nikon.
One year global warranty, and Nikon Germany adds another four years if you register your lens with them.
You then receive a five-year warranty certificate as a PDF file.

All my Nikkor Z lenses, including the Z TC-1.4x, came with this 5-year warranty.
Even with my Nikkor Z 50/1.8 S, which I bought used, the previous owner hadn't registered the lens, so I was able to register it in my name with a total of five years of warranty.
The 5 years expire the day after tomorrow for my Z 50/1.8 S.

I think it's a good move by Nikon; I haven't had to make a warranty claim yet, and several of my five-year lens warranties have already expired or are about to.
The extra warranty hasn't cost Nikon anything in my case so far, but it's an additional argument and advertising for buying OEM.

+1 For Nikon lenses in Germany.

I hope they will do the same with camera bodies, like reported here in Italy. They do come with a 1 year warranty in Germany at the moment. Not the EU consumer protection regulation of 2 years.

BTW at the moment they don't even have the parts, to repair the recalled Z5II.
