p.1 #1 · Help troubleshooting Godox wireless trigger with Canon flash

I recently purchased a Flashpoint R2 Pro Mark II (Godox XProII) transmitter and R2XR (Godox X1R) TTL wireless receiver to use with my older Canon 580EX speedlite. I can successfully wirelessly trigger the flash, but cannot make any adjustments to the flash via the transmitter at all, and the flash power seems to be exclusively controlled by whatever the mode and settings on the back of the speedlite are. It's as if the ONLY thing the transmitter is doing is saying "fire now" and nothing else. Transmitter and receiver are both set to the same channel and group.

Is this a limitation of the 580EX? Is there some setting I might not have set up correctly? I'm pretty annoyed to have gotten a more expensive trigger/receiver to have to constantly be fiddling on the back of the flash unit to make adjustments. I'm new to wireless flash so could definitely be doing something wrong, but it's not obvious to me what that something might be. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Although they may function with both Godox and Flashpoint flashes, the Flashpoint R2 Pro Mark II is not the same as the Godox XProII. The Flashpoint has a second row of vertical buttons on the right hand side of the display much of which are redundant to other buttons on the remote. I had one in Nikon version and it was abysmal at dropping sync, purged it for the Godox XProII and it has been solid.

As far as adjusting power via the remote, that according to Godox should work. You might want to dig into the R2 ProII's settings, there may be a sync function for it to communicate with the XR.

Here's a set video that may help. Note you must set the XR to Canon for it to control the output otherwise it will just trigger the flash but not allow output changes.

Thanks for this video. I went through and double checked that the X1R was set to Canon (I forgot if I had done that or not, but I had already), and that the channel, group, and ID were all the same. I don't see anything in the manual about syncing the with X1R.

I ended up calling Flashpoint customer support and it turns out the original 580EX is too old to support complete communication between the flash, transmitter, and receiver. Customer support was VERY helpful and walked me through testing a bunch of different things and nuances with the gear, so that was appreciated. Looks like I either need a new flash if I want to be able to adjust it via the receiver or at the very least can go with a less expensive manual transmitter if I'm willing to make all the adjustments I want on the flash itself.

That is odd because this page states the 580EX is compatible with the XR. You did set your XR to Canon right?
https://www.godox.com/product-d/XR-XRS.html

Everything I came across in promoting the XR seems to show using the X3 or X3Pro as the triggers so maybe the Flashpoint R2 Pro Mark II trigger is the issue, buy one if that doesn't work return it.

This "may" be of help.

I use X2T transmitter on a R6 ii and a 6D camera. On both cameras the settings on the X2T are not used for setting the flash.

The settings for the flashes are done using the flash menu in the camera. The X2T then transmits these settings to the remote. units. I believe it is the Flash Function menu. It provides setting control for each flash group.

It took me a while to figure this out.

Not a Godox owner, so an observation:
It could be that the Godox flash remote unit has TWO modes of use...
1) A Godox-specific radio slave mode using Godox protocols not specific to one brand of flash gear
2) A brand-speciific radio slave mode (E.G. Canon, Nikon) which communicates using brand-specific commands and protocols

I just consulted the manual for Godox XPROIIO and it specifically was compatible with only the Olympus.
OTOH, the Godox X2TP was compatible only with specified Godox products.

What specific model of Godox product is the OP trying to make work?

The Godox "X" communication link itself is essentially the same regardless of the camera brand, but the X band flash transmitter must match the camera brand in use. It converts the camera signals and flash adjustments into the X Band language. Now the X Band signals are standardized so any X Band receiver, one integrated into a studio strobe, speedlite, or can be converted through an X1R that matches another brand of light. All of the Godox lights now come with X Band receivers built into them, but the older lights before X Band don't have these built-in receivers, so be careful not to buy used, any Godox light that is more than about 4-5 years old. The X1R receivers give you the ability to use other brands of lights, if they attach to hot shoes, but again, beware of trying to use older lights.

The Godox X band is actually the high end of the WIFI band channels, as most other equipment that's set up for WIFI typically uses the lower channels. There are exceptions though, and if you experience problems using one channel, switch your transmitter and lights to another channel at least a few channels away from the offending channels. If your lights ever start firing on their own, it's a good bet that another photographer is on the same channel as you. Don't argue with him. Just quickly set your gear to work on a higher channel, again, a minimum of several channels away.
