p.2 #1 · Help with Z-mount Ultra wide

The 14-24 is a great lens but it does not take normal filters. The included plastic bayonet has light leakage with 10 stop NDs on some copies. The NiSi metal one works well but is also bulky. I used an angle grinder on mine to take off the pointless petals and now it is more compact but still takes up more space than I would like in a photo bag. The filters are big and bulky no matter what. If I were buying it now I would buy used here, no point in spending on new even after the rebates.

The 14-30 takes normal-ish 82mm filters. I have 77-82 mm step up rings on all my Z lenses for that reason. However the f/4 is not great for astro.

If your primary goal is astro it is very hard to beat the AFS 20/1.8 prime on an FTZ adapter. Can be purchased for a relatively small amount these days, particularly if you already own an FTZ. Alternatively the 20/1.8 for the Z mount can be had for $700ish used. UWA is often a drawback in astro. With a 1.8 aperture you can easily stay in a 15s exposure window and ISO below 10k.
