p.4 #1 · New PC build - questions

As promised, here is a list of components that were used for what I hope to be my last computer build. This project has not really been what I would consider to be fun. It has taken nearly a month to complete because it has fought me at each and every step of the way. Even now that it’s officially up and running, there are still things that need to be tweaked. Many workflow processes are very different from my old system, but I think it’s mostly due to Microsoft having it’s collective head shoved right up it’s collective…..exhaust system. I am NOT a fan of Win11.

Anyway….

Case = Phanteks Enthoo Pro TG PH-ES614PTG_BK
Processor = Intel Core Ultra 9 Desktop Processor 285K
Motherboard = ASUS ProArt Z890-CREATOR WIFI Z890 LGA 1851 ATX Motherboard
Memory = CORSAIR Vengeance RGB 64GB (2 x 32GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR5 6000 (PC5 48000)
Graphics = GIGABYTE WINDFORCE GeForce RTX 5080 16GB GDDR7 PCI Express 5.0 x16
Storage = Total of 18TB
WD_Black SN8100 2TB NVMe SSD - PCIe 5.0x4, M.2 2280
Also installed (because I bought it 6 months ago) = WD 10TB WD_Black
Internal Hard Drive HDD - 7200 RPM, SATA 6 Gb/s, 512 MB Cache
Also installed 6TB WD Internal SATA drive from old machine. (saved a lot of copy/paste)
Also installed DVD Read/Write drive from old machine
Power supply = CORSAIR RM1000x ATX 3.1 PCIe 5.1 Ready Fully Modular 1000W Power Supply
CPU Cooler = ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 - AIO CPU Cooler
Monitor = BenQ SW321C Photo Video Editing Monitor 32" 4K UHD
OS = Microsoft Windows 11 pro
Office Suite = Microsoft Office Home & Business 2024
Adobe Photoshop (what a nightmare that was!)

I think that about covers it as far as parts that might be of some interest.

I will refrain from bitching about issues with Win11 (let's just say there are so many stupid things already and I keep finding more every day), and the Office suite of programs. It caused chest pains.

Thank you to all who offered advice and guidance on my journey.

Sounds like you're mostly there Larry. Kudos for getting through a tough build out 👏. Guessing you'll be good to go for probably 5 years or more depending on the variables that can change.

Reminds me of all the antics I went through years ago building and rebuilding a number of computers that started back in 1985. Not to mention the growing pains brought on once Microsoft windows surfaced. When I retired in 2013 my current box was already 4-5 years old and struggling. Again was faced with upgrading. Finally sat down and did a hard look at the job in front of me and decided NOPE. Jumped ship to Apple. Been there ever since, and by far the headaches and frustrations have mostly vanished which I definitely place a value on.

Matt,
"Back in the day" I built the 5/6 computers I used in the 'on-location-sports-trailer-business' and was able to get them all to talk to each other pretty well. I don't recall it being as aggravating as this. For one thing, Winders wasn't quite as overly and unnecessarily complicated then. It seems they go out of their way to change schtuff for no other reason than to change schtuff.

Do you remember the guy that used to post to FM talking about covering HUGE cheerleading and gymnastics events with something like 100+ workstations. This would have been in the early 2000's. Unfortunately I can't remember his name, but he was instrumental in helping my little business get off the ground,

One thing I will say about this new machine...I really do like this 32" monitor! Wish I would have made that upgrade sooner.

One person that comes to mind might be Russ Isabella but not sure he is the one you are referring to. He did a lot of work in gymnastics for Utah State. Used to have conversations with him but haven't heard from him in quite some time. Thinking a bit more, it could have been Guy Mancuso. He was heavily into computer equipment use on site for his extensive photo work. Guy left us back in October after a valiant fight. So sad to see the good ones leave way to early.

I appreciate your response but neither of those names ring a bell unfortunately.

But I am very old now so there's that....

Hammy was the member that did all the big gymnastics/cheer/tumbling competitions. He was very restrictive of what he shared images why as he didn't want his work of underage competitors in what is relatively revealing outfits to be available outside of the teams and families.

I don't know if he had as many stations as you reference, but it wouldn't surprise me that a lot would be needed to handle all the post processing and sales involved with those huge events.'

Russ was involved with Utah, not Utah State. At one time he was a professor at Utah and moonlighted covering their athletics department. I really remember the women's gymnastics photos, but he may have been shooting other sports too.

YYYUUUPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hammy. That's it.

He coached me a lot behind the scenes about the technical stuff regarding how to make things work computer wise. In particular there was some software called BeTwin which made it possible to run several independently operated "viewing stations" from one computer. I don't remember how many was possible but I only ran 3 stations from one computer.

Thanks for remembering.

You are welcome. These days, you could run cheap Mac Minis or the little mini PCs for just browsing the ordering website/interface. That is, if you aren't not pushing photos to the web instantly.
