In early October 2021 we spent a couple of weeks on the Keweenaw Peninsula on the U.P. We were mostly based at F.J. McLain State Park since we were in a motorhome towing our Jeep. We saw some amazing colors during drives around the Keweenaw.

I've done countless photo trips to the Upper Peninsula. Absolutely beautiful area. I've always had good luck going some time the first entire week of October. The closer you go to the lake, the later peak color happens.
Everywhere is amazing. Places to look would be the Porcupine Mountains, Pictured Rocks, the forest roads south of Munising, Black River, the Keweenaw as mentioned, Taquamenon Falls area. There are amazing waterfalls everywhere.

Did this in 2020 as a Covid vacation. Went up through Wisconsin (Door County) then made our way back along the west coast of Michigan. Great Bear Dunes and Luddington were also highlights too.

Thank you for your suggestions. I have been looking at some of those areas already and will add your suggestions to my list of areas to research.

Also, at the western end of the Porcupine Mountains, the Presque Isle River has some absolutely beautiful waterfalls, rapids and rock formations. A must see.
And don't forget Bond Falls and Agate Falls. Two pretty iconic falls in the central UP.

Art, do you know, is the sea arch at Pictured Rock viewable only from the water by some type of boat?
Thank you for sharing the link. Looks like you got some outstanding color on your trip.
Would you guys describe the UP in early October to be inundated with tourists?
Most of the pictured rocks area is shear cliffs without many roads or trails to the edges.
By far the best way to experience this area is a boat tour out of Munising.
We were very happy to experience all the color we experienced in that area.
I don't recall any particularly crowded roads or areas during our time up there. We did a fair amount of driving to different parts of the UP.
