This is probably something I should know about but I don't and it took me surprise.
While post processing an image in Photoshop I cropped and resize the frame. I used the Generative Fill tool to fill in the empty space along one edge. It really wasn't all that much and I could have done it another way but I figured I'd just do it this way since it was faster. I've been noticing my computer starting to take a little longer to do things here lately (not sure why...could be due to it being 6 years old...I dunno), but it seemed to take a little longer than I anticipated to complete this task and then......a window popped up that said something like "task could not be completed-please check internet connection and try again".
What?? I was under the impression that all the computer processing needed to run generative fill had everything to do with my computer's components and not "the cloud". Am I wrong in that assumption?
Just a guess, Larry, but I suspect you were using AI- generated fill which would require an internet connection. IIRC, there is a toggle setting to turn AI assist on or off.
It's not the credits it's that it's being done on Adobe servers. I had no internet for 3 days in Mass after the storm and Lightroom refused to run the Generative Remove tool with the same message. I use this tool for dust and for small distractions. It uses Gen AI for filling but does not use credits (and my account is full as I don't and have never used Gen Fill functions),

If you're seeing the message 'task could not be completed-please check internet connection and try again,' it usually means your device or application is having trouble connecting to the internet. This can happen for a variety of reasons, such as network issues, firewall settings, or problems with your internet service provider.
Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue:
1. Check your internet connection: Make sure your device is connected to the internet and that the connection is stable.
2. Restart your device and router: Sometimes, simply restarting your computer and your internet router can resolve connectivity issues.
3. Check firewall or proxy settings: If you're on a work or school network, certain firewall or proxy settings might block access. You may need to adjust these settings or contact your IT department.
4. Try a different network: If possible, connect to a different Wi-Fi or wired network to see if the issue persists.
5. Check for application-specific issues: If this error appears in a specific Adobe application, you may want to review troubleshooting steps for that app. For example, if you're having trouble signing in to Creative Cloud, you can try clearing the OOBE folder* or adjusting your LAN settings as described in this community solution: You've been signed out - Adobe Community.
If the problem continues after trying these steps, you may want to check for any service outages or contact Adobe support for further assistance."

Thanks, everyone, for the replies.
I discovered that when you select the "remove" tool an additional menu bar appears. In that menu bar there is a selection regarding how you want generative AI to behave. One is Auto and it decides how much "power" to use when generating actions and will use the cloud to do so. It will tap into the cloud for processing when it decides it is necessary. Next is the "on" selection which indicates that it will ALWAYS tap into the cloud. Then there is an "off" selection which, in theory, only uses your computer offline for processing.
I really hadn't paid attention enough to see that menu selection appear when accessing either the remove button or when making a square selection and choosing "generative fill. After posting here I went to my preferences and changed how I wanted this activity to behave....no cloud, always native computer. I also changed that setting in the workspace menu that pops up.
Apparently these changes were made without my knowledge during one of the "updates" and made the "always use the cloud" selections as SOP. Maybe they said something along the way but I certainly didn't see it.
When working in PS today, after I made all the selections to NOT USE THE CLOUD, a pop up came up saying it couldn't complete my task because of slow or inadequate internet.
As it stands now, my feeling is that this is BS. Why would anyone want to spend significant dollars to build a fast computer only to have software REQUIRE you to use their servers? How long before they start telling you what you can or can not process?
The reason PS needs to use Adobe servers for some of the AI operations is not so much computing power as it is access to a large database of image information. That data would be far too much to store locally. The question you need to consider is whether the results are enough better that you want to use the remote server. I have done numerous tests and find that in many, even most, cases the results are noticeably better (not quicker, better). I have never hit the credits limit.
