p.1 #1 · Red-bellied Woodpecker finds a new type of tree
I was photographing this Red-bellied Woodpecker at kissena Park here in New York City when it flew over to a lamp post and started eating insects that were on it.
Comments and suggestions welcome,
Morris

That is cute Morris, nice rbw showing adaptability.
Every once in a while I have to get up on the roof with the leaf blower or leaves gather around the brick chimney metal flashing at its base. If I don't and they start to rot, it attracts bugs. You can guess what happens next... have you ever been awoke by the sound of a machine gun on your roof in the morning? Thats what it sounds like when a large pileated wp has found breakfast on your chimney flashing!

he probably has the common sense not to try and peck that strange tree. if he did, i don't think extra strength tylenol would help his headache. great opportunistic photo set, morris.

Thank you Eric,
We don't get Pileated yet I've seen them when traveling and they are big and there digging can be heard a long way. I'd be even more worried about the damage they could do to your home.

Excellent captures, Morris.
Was that hole in the lamp fixture made by this guy?
Greg
Thank you Greg,
The holes are weep holes drilled into the lamp during manufacturing to let water that gets in get out. They are very common in outdoor construction, you may have them on the outside of your windows.

Thank you Wendall,
It's hard to believe they don't get handmakes from the wood they peck. It was carefully picking small insects off the lamp housing just as it would from a tree.

Nice grab Morris. It might want to rethink that particular tree.
