Is there an efficient way to edit the list of keywords in Lightroom? I have been going through and manually deleting them one by one, but that is tedious and slow.
Bill, whatcha mean "going through and manually deleting them one by one" -- file by file in each folder in LRC?
I'd attack the problem centrally, through the Library module. And as far as my quick testing shows, you don't have to be in any particular folder (even though I started in Pictures. Areas that display/access keywords: Keywording (Keyword Tags, Keyword Suggestions, Keyword Set) and Keyword List.
BACK UP YOUR COMPUTER AND LIGHTROOM BEFORE CONTINUING
Open Keyword List. Every keyword you have ever entered is displayed, along with the number of times used.
Select a keyword. A hollow arrow appears on the far right [hoverhint: "click to show photos containing this keyword"].
Click the arrow. All the keyworded files from every folder will appear in the central gallery.
Right-click on the desired keyword. From the eleven choices, select Delete. The next prompt offers Cancel or Delete [deleted the wrong keyword? Ctrl/command-Z before moving on].
That is basically what I have been doing. I was hoping maybe they were all listed so I might go through and highlight the ones to delete and do it all at once.
You can export your current keywords, edit as plain text and import the revised list. Look at the bottom of the Metadata menu. This option is really designed for moving existing keywords to a new empty catalog. I suggest txt rather than csv. Nesting is done with tabs.

You can select multiple keywords, then select all images fetched, then Delete.
Or, you can follow Jeff's most excellent way which is much more thoughtful and safer. Thanks, Jeff!
I have a related question that perhaps gets to the concept of how Adobe stores reusable text in general. I enter copyright text into a field on the info screen for each file. ACR and Photoshop (and I assume LR) thoughtful remember each entry, listing them in order from most recent to most distant in the past.
But sometimes I mess up and accidentally enter the text incorrectly and don’t notice until after I hit enter to add it. I can change to the correct text pretty easily, but now that incorrect entry becomes part of the pop-up list.
There must be a way to delete or edit the text in those entries. Anyone know how?

I haven't tried it in LR, but I've had the same experience in my Firefox web browser on Windows10/11, and found that if I use the up and down arrow keys to navigate to the incorrect entry in the pop-up list, the delete key will remove the entry from the list.
