p.1 #1 · Sony A7RV vs. A7CR

I currently own both these cameras ( along with others ) that I use primarily for landscapes, architecture, and portraits. Trying to decide if I really need to keep both since for these usage I don’t really need the two card slots. Of course the RV’s better view finder is a great help for these subjects but the CR is better for travel since it travels lighter and packs smaller.
In these usage cases the two 61 Mpixels sensors appear to give almost identical results and the limited shutter speed of 1/4000 does not seem to create problems for these subjects.

Any one using both on a regular basis or have you chosen one or the other to meet these needs? If so which? Please share yout thoughts here. Thank you.

If you primarily use GM lens (which means they are not small), a7RV provides better handling and more balance.

I'm considering adding one or the other. I'm leaning towards the A7Rv. Mostly for the finder and mechanical shutter some, too. My subject mix does include some fast-moving subjects at times, and the better finder might help in general, and think of use with larger lenses, too.

I'd look to if you use a bracket/full plate, etc., that might be deleted for travel to be a bit smaller. That could help with "packing." If using a larger bracket or AS plate for tripod use, do you consider the tripod in the packing size "calculation?"

I much prefer A7rV, main reason being ergonomics, rear screen and especially EVF. A7rV is much nicer to use and that is reflected in better pictures. A7Cr has also only single card slot and 1/4000 sec shutter which can be a problem.

A7c series cameras make sense with small primes, otherwise the camera body size difference is minor importance.

If you already have them both It's only your personal preference. A7CR's only advantage is the smaller size, and we don't know how important factor is for you.
Had both cameras (not the same time), I couldn't use to the flippy screen so this is the deal breaker for me. There are few truly small lenses capable resolving 60MP resolution edge to edge, like 40 2.5 or Viltrox 50 f2 air, with GM primes, or zoom lenses A7CR's size advantage diminishes, and for good ergonomic better to use the additional grip.
I considered A7CR as a dual purpose, modular tool, with small primes an EDC camera and with the grip a professional grade camera with high resolving lenses. And I think it still can work for most photographer, but I stick with tilting screen as long as there are such alternative (A7RIVa).

Right now I use the Sony extended grip that came with the A7CR on it. On my A7RV currently have a VG-C4E battery grip on it but can move that to another camera if I wanted to keep the A7RV smaller. Would still want to have an L- bracket on it though.

I do have two sets of primes and zooms. Smaller ones like the f/2.8 G zooms and f/2 primes for the A7CR and fill size 24-70/2.8 GM II or 70-200/2.8 GM II for the A7RV. Currently have two full kits with on centered around each body.

p.1 #8 · Sony A7RV vs. A7CR

I have and use both, though I have the A7RIV, not A7RV.

The A7RIV is when I want the best IQ or when doing flash portraits (250 sync speed), I use my 4 Batis 25mm to 135mm lenses and the 50mm f1.4 GM. When I want wide angle the 20mm f1.8 G, and for birds-action-airplanes my 3 zooms, the 100-400mm GM, 70-200mm f4 II G and 20-40mm f2.8 Tamron.

The A7CR is used with my smaller primes for travel/general use. These include the C/V 21mm 3.5CS, FE 28 f2, Zony 35mm 2.8 ZA* and Sigma 45mm f2.8* (*both I plan to replace by the new C/V 40mmm f2 Septon), the Zony 55mm f1.8ZA and the Sigma 90mm f2.8. So once the Septon gets here, 5 small primes from 21 to 135mm/crop as a lightweight kit in a PD 6L sling, just under 7 lbs. This is my planned kit I am taking to Thailand this year for 2 months.

I definitely see a need for both size bodies, as I want the 61MP and the in-camera crop it offers. I too am downsizing, but it's my A6700 and A7III backup bodies that are being sold along with some other misc primes.

My point is that the size/weight saving of A7CR is irrelevant if lens are big and heavy. Both are similarly priced. a7R V has more features, i.e the EVF on a7R V is much better.

I would choose a7CR only if I would use small pancake lens (i.e 40mm F2.5).

Typically the largest lens I use on an 7CR is the 440 gram FE 24-50/2.8 G. I do own the 40/2.5 G, 50/2.5 G, and 24/2.8 G but admit I tend to switch between the 24-50/2.8 and the 16-25/2.8 G the most. The Viltrox 85mm f/2 @ only 360 grams is another lens I like to use.

I had the A7-RIV and now the A7CR. I prefer the CR not only for its lighter weight but for its small size when fitting into a bag. The main lens I use is the Tamron 28-200, and I don't find it a bad balance at all on the CR, partly because the CR has an excellent grip. And even with the Tamron I notice a weight improvement over it on the RIV. I also have no problem with the EV on the CR. IF you compare it with the RV or even the RIV it's smaller, but in practical usage there I have not been bothered by it at all, esp. if you are using AF lenses. I also like the smaller footprint for street work. I am an enthusiast, if you are a pro you might want the two card slots.

While I like the two symmetric CF Express Type A slots on the A7RV since I’m no shooting any critical like a wedding or once in a lifetime sporting events they are severely under utilized by me. Also since I also own the original A1 I can use that with my larger lenses like the FE 50/1.2 GM, FE 135/1.8 GM, FE 24-70mm GM II, and FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM II and others. The largest lens I will carry in my smaller kit is the FE 70-200mm f/4 Macro G II.

Admit that reading the feedback here I’m leaning toward keeping both the A7CR and A7RV unless I have another need that requires me to free up some cash. Sure I’d like an f/2 zoom but don’t really think their increased weight is something I want to carry. Thank you.
