Thanks guys, I guess I'm looking for something 30-50mm equivalent that I can fall in love with. A lens that has some pop. Ideally with f2 or lower.
40mm equivalent, tiny, and has some really nice pop. Quite contrasty across the frame with a modern rendering.
Shooting f2.0 you get a little bit of spherical aberration and flaring which adds some excitement and character. Fairly well controlled as you stop down beyond f2.8-f4. Epic sunstars.
Super easy to focus with and optimal amount of throw. I shoot kids with it all the time and its no issue at all. Unlike other CV manual lenses for X mount, focusing on infinity is at the focusing hard-stop. You can have a image focused and composed before you even raise the camera to your eye!
Biggest con is maybe the bokeh is a little "busy", but it might not bother you.

The OG 35mm f1.4 is very good, so I'd second that. Anything in the Viltrox Air series will be good if you can live without an aperture ring. Just pick your prefered focal length - the 25mm is close enough to 35mm equivalent. I'd skip the Fuji 23mm f2 in favour of the Viltrox if looking for a 23mm.
The new 23mm f1.4 R WR LM is the cat's meow if you can live with the larger size and price.
The 50mm f2 is also good but there are other 3rd party lenses in that range that are a bit longer and faster....Show more →
FWIW I absolutely love the Viltrox Air lenses! On the new bodies there's so many custom buttons & dials you can easily set one for aperature. I have 15/25/35/56 - work solid for both photos/videos and nice to not really have to rebalance gimbal switching between focal length. I use them on xm5 alot! Great for beginners or exploring different focal ranges on a budget

Quick update. I did pick up a copy of the older 33 f/1.4 and I'm really loving it. The compact size is fantastic, I never hesitate to keep it on the camera and the image quality is so satisfying. The focal range works is a lot of circumstances for me. I kept the 23mm f/2.8 since it is so pocketable i can leave the 33 on the camera and have the 23 in my coat pocket in case I run into a situation where I need it. I still don't love that lens as the images don't get me excited so I picked up the 23mm f/1.4 R LM WR which makes awesome images and has the fastest quietest zoom I've had the pleasure of using in many years, but it is too big and heavy for the way I use my camera and I just don't end up bringing it out so I will probably sell it.

I’m confused.
The “older” f/1.4 lens that is more” compact” is the 35mm lens, not the 33mm. Which one did you actually end up with?
I also think that when you mention that the 23mm lens has the “ fastest quietest zoom” that you probably meant autofocus rather than zoom, right?

The first generation Fujinon 56mm 1.2 is a great lens and sells for very good prices on the used market. The APD version adds the proverbial icing on the cake. It's a bigger lens, but combined with the X-E3 it fits perfectly in the hand. It will be the same with the X-E5.
Same range, better low light?
23mm f/2.8 pancake (35mm eq)
35mm f/1.4 (52mm eq, old original prime)
If you want 2 lens, and some real range:
23mm f/2.8 pancake (35mm eq)
16-50mm f/2.8-4.8 zoom (24-75mm eq)... and it is internal zoom
I like you ideas. Let me share some that work for me.
I pair (using all Fujifilm lenses) the 27mm f/2.8 with the 50mm f/2. I like the almost 2:1 focal length range the 50mm is a great lens and pretty small and light for what it is.
If I were making the 35mm part of a pair, I’d me more likely to pair it with the 23mm f/2.8 or possibly the 18mm f/2.
For a pair favoring wide angles, 27mm and 14mm f/2.8.
Another “more range” option is to pair the 27mm with one of the longer zooms, like a 55-200 or a 70-300.
My basic travel and street setup is actually three lenses: 14mm f/2.8, 27mm f/2.8, 50mm f/2.
