Exploring how to use a modified Sony RXOII on a gimbal I try to find the best way to control the camera via remote control.
Option 1 is via Wifi with a smartphone app like Monitor Plus or Sony's Imaging Edge on my Iphone XS. Both apps work, but do not reliably connect, which makes them suitable for playing around but not for serious use.
I hear that newer iPhones like the 15 can be tethered directly to newer Sony cameras via usb-c cable enabling the iphone to be used as both external monitor and remote control? Maybe newer smartphones like Sony's Xperia can also be used for this?
Option 2 is to tether the RXOII to a regular shutter cable via the micro-usb multi port of the RX0II that works fine but is clumsier to manage in the field than wireless remote
Option 3 is the shutter button on the top of the RX0II but it bumps the camera when I start and stop recording hence my preference for remote control
Option 4 is an external field monitor/recorder. If I understand right newer (expensive) models like the Atomos Ninja V and Shinobi enable camera control of the camera from the monitor, but older (affordable) models like the Ninja II do not. But it is also clumsier, bigger, more complicated... and most likely overkill
Both Atomos and Accsoon make gizmos that can be used as intermediary devices to connect a modern smartphone to a camera enabling the phone to be used as monitor, recorder and also camera control?, but when used in this way the phone reportedly has a tendency to overheat and sometimes automatically shuts down the LCD to protect it, not a very reliable option in the field?
Option 5 that I prefer is to control the camera via Sony's RM-LVR2, a wrist-mounted remote control with LCD that looks like a a watch and is designed to be used with Sony action cameras that I have also used with Sony A7S with no problems. Unfortunately when I try to use the LVR2 with the RXOII it searches for and finds the RX0II and starts to pair but does not end up being able to complete the pairing process, so maybe newer Sony cameras like the RXOII do not have the same possibility to connect with the LVR2 as older cameras like the original RXO or the early A7-series cameras do? But maybe the problem is me not the LVR2?
Option 6: get a bigger gimbal and use a regular remote with my A7RII, a reliable workhorse that has never let me down...
The RXOII is a nifty camera but maybe not as good for field work of the kind that I have in mind as the golden oldies?
Man I forgot that one existed haha. Have you tried any of the Sony wireless remotes? IIRC it works with one of Sony’s vlogging grips that can trigger the shutter and recording. I have the iPhone 17 pro and it can be tethered via usb using the monitor app. It works great with basically zero lag compared to a wireless connection.
Thanks, good to know the camera can be tethered via iphone 17 Pro and that works better than ¡“§£¡ wif! Does doing so heat up the phone or rapidly drain its battery?
So now I try to find out what earlier generation of iphones or other smartphones the camera can be tethered with, the name of the app that is used for the tethering, and if it can only be done via usb-c to usb-c, as the RX0II only has vintage micro-USB multi and mini HDMI and the ancient iphoneXS just has a lightning connector.... but it still beats smoke signals
For phones you have to use the older Sony Imaging Edge app IIRC. Unfortunately that app was a bit of a mess compared to Monitor+. Sorry for any confusion, I was just talking about being able to tether a newer phone via USB, not specifically the RX0II. It's been awhile since I've used one. This is the Sony wireless remote that's compatible with the RX0II and you can obviously find generic versions for much less:
Do you need a remote screen? Or is just AF and shutter triggering enough? My simple JJC BTR-S1 bluetooth remote connects to the RX0M2 with no trouble and actuates the shutter.
Seems like it is a signal thing. I dug up my ancient JJC-RMS1 or Sony RMT-DSLR2 remote that both refuse to cooperate, not surprisingly since if I understand right they rely on infrared technology that the newer RXOII does not have.
But the RXOII does apparently work with bluetooth, which would explain why your newer bluetooth BTR-S1 remote works, and wifi and nfc, which does not explain why the Sony RM-LVR2 does not work, as it apparently connects via wifi and nfc (same as smartphone remote)?
Meanwhile, here is a few quirky points that may interest aspiring Egyptologists and other students of ancient civilizations:
Apparently the original Sony LVR1 remote does works with the Sony nex-5R via the Playmemories Camera Remote app, but the newer LVRII did not (it found the Nex-5R and begans to link then failsed) -: until I updated to the latest version 1.03 of Nex 5R firmware, after which the Nex-5R worked smoothly with the LVR2 remote.
The Nex 5R also did not work with the Imaging Edge app on my iphone -: until I updated the camera to the latest version 1.03 of Nex 5R firmware, after which it also worked smoothy.
The LVRII remote works perfectly with my A7RII via the Playmemories Camera Remote app, and so does Imaging Edge on my phone.
