p.1 #1 · Sirui Aurora 85mm f/1.4

No thread on this lens. I had planned on picking up the Viltrox 85mm f/1.4 eventually, but was in my local store and they had a batch of Sirui Aurora 85mm f/1.4s there, all open box or used, but priced at $360. Since I was trading in a lens, I also paid no tax, so got this for a little more than half what I would have paid for the Viltrox. From reviews I've seen, the Viltrox is a bit sharper, but most people prefer the rendering of the Sirui, and after just shooting around a little bit, I can see why.

The lens is plenty sharp wide open, but not bitingly sharp, which should make it excellent for portraits. Bokeh is, to my eyes, fantastic. Buttery soft, and it even handles very difficult backgrounds quite well. AF is reasonable in speed and very quiet. The aperture ring is perfect - plenty of resistance and feels like a high end safe (or very much like the Fujicron primes). Build is quite lovely, especially for such an affordable lens, with weather sealing, a metal build, and plenty of features. It's also very light for an 85mm f/1.4, at around 550g.

Just two quick shots here, but then scroll a bit for some comparison...

The reason I wanted a budget 85/1.4 is to free up some cash by eventually divesting of my 105/1.4E. Now, I LOVE that lens. It's got its quirks, but the rendering is gorgeous, and while I don't use it enough to justify the price, and it's far too large to daily carry, I still love it. So I was curious to see how the Sirui stacked up against it.

First - my little portrait primes at the moment: Viltrox 85mm f/2 EVO, Sirui 85mm f/1.4, and Nikon 105mm f/1.4E:

I did a quick test shot setup on a tripod, and did my best to generally frame the 105 at a similar framing (though because of space limitations and actual perspective changes from moving, it's not a perfect 1:1 match, but close enough).

First, full shots with the Sirui at f/1.4 and the Nikon at f/1.4:

And 100% crops of the bokeh:

I'm surprised to say, I actually slightly prefer the Sirui rendering here. I'm not really posting sharpness crops here, because for this comparison I honestly don't care, but I'll go into that at the end.

Stopped down they look quite similar, though the Sirui has 15 aperture blades so maintains a slightly rounder specular highlight shape (though the Nikon is quite good too) - this is at f/4:

Against the Viltrox, the extra stop of aperture certainly makes a difference wide open:

Stopping down to f/2, the Sirui still shows more blur, and softer edged highlights. A win here for sure in bokeh. (you can see the Viltrox's higher contrast here though):

Sharpness:
Sirui and Nikon at f/1.4:

Quick discussion. Wide open, the Sirui is the softest of the three, but it is not too far behind the Nikon, and still provides good resolution across the frame. It's just more akin to a 2010s era DSLR 85mm in wide open sharpness rather than some of the more modern high end glass. Also, it is at its softest when focused close up, like here (focus point was around 1m away). Between 2 and 5m, the Sirui is very sharp wide open.

Stopped down, the Sirui and the Nikon are pretty close, though the Nikon sharpens up in the corners a bit faster. The Viltrox is, hands down, the sharpest of the three, and in fact, the Viltrox at f/2 is sharper than both the Sirui and the Nikon at f/4 (though both are quite sharp at that aperture...just the Viltrox is a razor from wide open).

For the price I paid, I'm MORE than happy with this. Excited to use it more.

Thanks, Jordan, for the info and testing you did. Do agree that the bokeh from this lens is pretty nice.

I’ve read that there is crazy copy variation with Sirui lenses so make to do a brick wall test before settling on keeping it. I’ve seen some copies that will ghost HARD near the edges, it’s the tell-tell sign you have a dud. Looks good.

Luckily they had four copies of the lens available, and I was able to test them. All were decent, but this was the best and most even of the three I tried, and looks good across the frame.

Can you test all three at f2? I find the 105E improves substantially one stop down.

Here’s a review including direct comparison against the Viltrox 85mm f1.4:
https://phillipreeve.net/blog/review-sirui-85mm-1-4-aurora/

The Sirui has very pleasing rendering but imo the Viltrox is not too far behind (the f1.4 that is not the f2).

The main advantage of the Sirui is the amazing size and weight. It seems the price paid for that are the slower STM motors. I also heard mixed reports about focus accuracy with the Sirui, which pushed me further towards picking the Viltrox ultimately.

I’m considering picking up the Sirui 35mm f1.4. Mostly as a backup solution in case the Nikon-Viltrox lawsuit goes bad and Viltrox never releases their upcoming 35mm f1.4 for Nikon. But also because it seems like a good lens and the AF performance is less critical at that focal length imo.

Both lenses improve stopped down, though I find sharpness wise, the Sirui catches up completely to the Nikon at f/2, at least in the center (the edges are still slightly in favor of the Nikon). Bokeh wise, they're pretty similar at f/2:

The Viltrox is notably sharper at f/2, but I think all three lenses are definitely sharp enough for most any work at f/2, and the Sirui and Nikon at f/1.4 also.

I had looked at that comparison several times. I think if I were buying new at MSRP, I'd also get the Viltrox, but at this price, with the size and weight bonus as well, it made much more sense for me to get the Sirui. I am far more pleased with it than I expected to be. Really beautiful rendering, and AF has been good for me so far, though I haven't really stress tested it yet. In the handful of portraits I've shot with it (most with people who don't want their images shared at the moment), it did at least as well as the Nikon 105 does for me. That is, mostly accurate, with one or two very slight misses forward (though I think that's more down to Nikon's Eye AF system, since I've had that experience with pretty much every large aperture portrait lens on Nikon).

Your examples reinforce to me just how much I don't like the Evo's bokeh. The Sirui is very nice in that regard, but you're paying for it in sharpness and contrast.

That said, the 105 is timeless if you can stomach the size, the rendering is sublime.

All those lenses are sharp...Viltrox have more clinical sharpness, but Aurora is not soft...just little bit sharpening in Lightroom, and you can get similar results, but with better bokeh

A few more samples from today - a mix of wide open and stopped down. I used Scott's vintage film recipe for this today - and added grain on the final shot. Still really impressed with how this lens draws. Even more distant wide open shots (like that last one) are clean, even when busy behind.

Really great rendering! I've been on the fence about my 85/1.2 and may pick this up to see if I like the AF enough (don't shoot sports with it, that was one of my original and now-abandoned ambitions).

Just took delivery and WOW, the build quality is better than I expected, even after reading praise after praise for it.

THAT is how an aperture ring is supposed to click, Viltrox I like the balance on the Zf better than the 85 EVO too, even though the Sirui tips forward where the EVO doesn't...don't know how to explain that.

Yeah, It's quite an impressive little package, and feels really high end. I agree that the aperture ring is perfect. Only downside on the build is the damping on the focus ring, which is lighter than I'd like, but that's a pretty minor complaint at this price point.

Did a quick drive around town, found the AF extremely sure footed and confident. However, f/1.4 at 3pm on a Texas afternoon pushes the Zf to its shutter speed limits.

Having just had the Viltrox 85 EVO in hand, It seems like the Aurora sharpens up and holds its own with that very sharp little lens, while having a few extra tricks up its sleeve in a very compact body. I do see a similar specular highlight effect in both the EVO and Aurora that the 85/1.2 simply doesn't have (my reference point for ultimate rendering quality).

Couple full quick Zf res examples, just looking at contrast and sharpness. A big takeaway is seeing sharpness at this level on the Zf indicates that the lens plays very well with the aggressive IBIS unit of the Zf...a very encouraging sign vs what I'm seeing on some other third party glass like cheaper TTArtisan and Viltrox units.

At 1.4 it's completely acceptable if not better than I was expecting.

At 8, it's as sharp as you'd like

Nice ghosting control in the near transition zone behind subject (goal post) at 1.4

Near MFD sharpness is quite good even at 1.4 and bokeh is well controlled even with messy foliage

The transition zone happens near and fast at 1.4, but overall rendering is lovely

Bokeh torture test, first at 1.4, not a ton of LoCA jumping out at me

2.8

4.0

Finally just a few examples with one of my recipes with some negative clarity/sharpness to take the bite off, and some grain added on the Zf, really like the way the out of focus areas render in this use case.

A couple more wide open "real world" type examples, with dogs that don't listen and AF-C + subject detection, lots to like with both rendering and focus accuracy.

I won't subject you to every aperture tested, but here are a few A/B samples against the Z 85/1.2.

The Sirui hangs with the Z way more than it deserves to. The main takeaway is that the Z 85 is simply a flawless lens that is razor sharp all the way from f/1.2 which is insane to see as always. The overall bokeh quality with mid distance objects is extremely similar. The Sirui is noticeably softer at f/1.4 and catches up quickly.

The Z is a softer, lower contrast rendering overall and actually runs into moire at more apertures due to the blistering sharpness inside the focal field.

S @ 1.4

Z @ 1.4

Stopping down a bit, we see the Sirui tightening up nicely

S @ 2.8

Z @ 2.8

By 5.6 and beyond, the differences in bokeh are basically non-existent and it comes down to how much sharpness you want. For most applications, I don't see how the Sirui's output here falls short in any metric.

With near-to-subject background objects, there's more of a difference in rendering, as the Sirui has more structure.
