I strictly do birding for many years
As I get older, light gear becomes almost a must (without breaking the bank)
I'm looking at X-H2 + 500mm XF as a potential basic gear for my hobby
Would like to hear honest feedback from current Fuji users here, especially for BIF
X-H2s may be faster but I prefer higher resolution for cropping ability and details
Thanks in advance
No experience for me with the XF 500mm lens yet, but check out @morris over in the Nature & Wildlife thread here at FM. He has stunning photos of birds with it.

40MP sounds like a huge advantage over 26MP when it comes to cropping yet remember that it's only about 20% more pixels on each axis. You will get a very small advantage for cropping while the 40 FPS frame rate is a game changer for birds in flight as you get many more images to chose from. The XH2s + XF 500mm is a very hand holdable combination yet I shoot mostly off a tripod as letting planet earth support my gear lets me come home more rested and also avoids stressing past injuries. The tracking is pretty amazing yet not perfect and nobody's tracking is perfect. This Northern Harrier is taken full frame as it raced past me. This is the second frame of a burst at 40 FPS and I barley had time to compose and the camera focused in an instant.
This barn swallow image is cropped from about 1/4 of the frame:
Yet that image is shot through rain and has a touch of motion blur. Here is a more than 1/4 frame crop of a Carolina Wren:
There both great cameras and the XF 500mm is a delight to use. It reminds me of the very popular Nikon 500mm PF.

Thanks for the reply and excellent photos
May have to rent the combo before taking the plunge
That's a great idea and you could rent both bodies and the lens. You may be able to find sample RAW files from both cameras and experiment with crops. This is a link to my setup guide for action photography with Fuji cameras:
I have been very happy with the Fuji XF 500mm lens. I pair it with the X-H2s, which is "only" 26 megapixels, but it has a stacked sensor and is significantly and noticeably faster to focus than my X-T5 (which has the same 40mp sensor and focusing system as the X-H2 body.)
The X-H2s with the battery grip and the 500mm lens makes a fairly compact and lightweight package. I mean, for that sort of thing. The 500 is smaller than the 150-600 Fuji zoom, and a stop faster.
