I was on a business trip to Sand Diego and had a short time to take in the USS Midway. I was only onboard for a couple hours and it was honestly not enough time to take in the sites and the history. My next trip to the area will definitely schedule more time for a second visit.
It is amazing to me that it entered service in 1945 and was active for almost 50 years! Walking through halls and areas that sailors first walked through 80 years ago was surreal. It is incredibly impressive now, it must have been mind blowing back then.
I thought I would share a few images with the community.
Nice pixs.
Bet that was neat to see and impressive how big they are, truly amazing for sure.
I've only seen one as well and would love to see some more again sometime.

All those pictures are great, even the mannequins look real, very kool. ( lotta history there )
Thank you Bill! I was very humbling and impressive. As I said, I will be back for a second, longer visit. They have a self guided audio tour that I want to experience next time.
Great photos you captured here and on your website. I can smell the JP5 jet fuel in some of them
The Midway was my battle group during the first Gulf War. I was stationed on a destroyer, but had to go to the Midway infirmary for a month because they were the only ship that had an X-ray machine on board. It was a cool experience, but I was ready to get back to my boat. I didn’t know anyone there and constantly got lost on the carrier. Huge difference compared to the destroyer.
I took a tour of the Midway eleven years ago, with several of my buddies from the destroyer. It really brought back memories. It brought a few guys to tears. It was like as soon as the war was over, they preserved her in moth balls. I believe the handwriting on the clear grease boards in the combat room was the original writing. You took some great photos capturing the scenes and lighting there.
I have a few friends and family that asked me to go on a tour with them. I am hopeful to get it done this year!

Thank you for your service! I am really glad you enjoyed the photos and very sorry you needed medical attention on board. I hope you fully recovered and there was no long term impact for you.

Both my parents were in World War II Navy. My mother outranked my father..He nicknamed her "Chief". Never knew why until I asked dad....60+ years later.

Thank you Chad, it was my pleasure to serve. I am doing well today, no long term effects.

Thank you chad! Very gracious of you! I do NOT like to infringe upon other members posts but the coincidence of what you posted and me being out that morning and this "18 wheeler" going thru town was more than a coincidence for me.
I was photographing the "mission style" Social Services building behind the truck. It was once a major rail depot for the area with trains heading South to DC and East to Baltimore and West to Pittsburgh.
Nice collection of images, hard to pull down to a few from so many good shots.
From 1976 to 1979 I was stationed on a US Navy frigate, homeported in Yokosuka, as was the Midway at the time. We operated together frequently. Seeing it brings back memories and we've toured it a time or two. It's well worth a visit if interested in Naval history, Navy aviation and the like. One of a number of worthy visit spots in the San Diego area if one gets a chance to go to California and San Diego.
The little park area where several of the linked images were taken has quite a bit to offer on it's own., several monuments to historic people and actions, the VJ Day Kiss, and the "National Salute to Bob Hope and the Military" a series of bronze statues commemorating the tradition of USO entertaining and serving the troops and 50 years of Bob Hope Shows. It includes a looping sound track from his tour shows and while I never saw him live, the TV specials were always meaningful and memorable.
