Has anyone tried this combo? I read on photgorpahylife that for mirrorless formula wide angle lenses they don’t adapt well to Nikon Z cameras. Wondering if it could still work?!

That warning needs a caveat that says it's really lens dependent. While there is a sensor stack difference between Nikon and Sony that can impact performance when adapting wides, the greatest impact will be on smaller UWAs where the exit pupil is closer to the sensor and the angle of incidence on the rays hitting the corners and edges more severe so the designers had to compensate for Sony's stack in the design. For example, a coworker of mine switched from E to Z last year, and was happy to find his Batis 18 was not at all a disappointment adapted. He's using it while he's saving for the Z 12-24. He said his Laowa 10/2.8 was more disappointing, but not enough to keep him from using it stopped down.

You've got two things working for you with the Sigma. One, 28's not that wide. Two, it's a zoom that's not very wide, so the exit pupil isn't going to be all that close to the sensor. I can't tell you it'll be perfection, but those two facts would give me license for a rental, at least, to see it it's something I can work with. I'd actually recommend a rental first for that lens anyway. It's a great zoom, but it is a beast.
