p.1 #1 · (More) Death Valley Winter Photos

Since I shared my earlier set of Death Valley photographs I have continued to work through the raw images. Here is another smaller set of photographs from the visit. All of these come from a morning at Badwater Basin.

Believe it or not, I think there will still be men more set to share from this visit — coming up in a week or so.

Enjoy!

(Since some are interested in such things: I use a Canon 5DsR system… so I’ve shared this in the Canon forum, too. I’m happy to respond there to questions, if any, about what I use and how I work.)

As usual nice work Dan!! There is a problem. I very much wanted to go to Deva this Winter but health concerns have intervened. Maybe next year. It is such a spectacular place for photography and you did it some justice.

Thanks, Morris. I think that those two have the more intense colors of early light, since they were made before the colors transitioned more toward their midday quality.

Thanks. That “quiescent” quality is, for me, one of the defining characteristics of the Death Valley landscape — huge spaces full of immense silence and stillness. (Well, except for when those dust storms kick up!)

Thanks, Monica. I kind of like that “gravitas” description, and resonates with how I feel that I approach these subjects.

Sorry you can’t make it this year! I hate to say this, but there is a very good chance that it is going to be an exceptional wildflower year in the region. Big blooms (including the famous “super blooms”) come after significant rain earlier in the season — and that happened this year. There was a very big storm — big enough to cause flooding and damage — back in November, followed by another significant one right around Christmas.

We’re making an extra effort to be there for this eventuality. We have return visits scheduled in late February and March.

Thanks! Especially in DEVA it is (almost) all about that light!
