Known locally as Fellsfjara, this black-sand beach has been rebranded Diamond Beach for tourists, to Icelandic displeasure. In the depth of winter, with the sun low and due south, stranded glacial ice becomes a transient vessel for light.

Jim: Even if the sky had cooperated in September, you would not get something like this scene. It is from early Nov until early Feb when the sun loiters on the southern horizon and is low enough that magic can happen. December is, of course, the optimal time.

Parul: As I noted in another response, the low sun on the southern horizon during Nov-Feb provides this backlit illumination that is not available at other times of the year.
