p.1 #1 · Shooting with just the lcd screen?

So I picked up an R6Mii recently. I used to shoot with a 60D but it was never sports, just family and landscapes so this is a whole different animal. This weekend was the first real time out with it. I know I want the 70-200 2.8 and the 24-105 2.8 just not sure which to get first. So I rented the 70-200 for my daughter's cheer comp this weekend since I'm not as close to the stage. Well it got canceled this weekend due to snow, but I did end up being able to go to a middle school basketball game and shoot some pictures. After watching 2 other full time photographers at this game im trying to figure out how they shoot the way they do. I know camera's that one guy shoots with are both r6miis and he mainly uses the rf 24-105. The guy never used the viewfinder the whole game. Always held the camera low and used the back screen. He posted some of the photos to his page today and they are perfect.

Does anyone else shoot like that? How do you keep focus like that? Are you always holding down the focus button while taking pictures?

The R6 II supports subject tracking although I'm unsure if that was part of the equation you saw. Maybe a combination of back button focus with the shutter button. Interesting in that the professional photogs I know & shoot with do not use the LCD screen.

I rarely use the back LCD screen to shoot anything. The rare times I use it is when the camera is held up high or very low and I can't see through the viewfinder and use the screen to see what I'm shooting.

Ditto what Scott said.

However, you can use that LCD screen to hold the camera lower and get good shots instead of sitting low and using the EVF, but I think it's harder to keep your subject on the screen with the LCD screen.

The only advantagges o using the view finder on a mirrorless camera are comfort, blocking out the sunlight, and having a diopter to correct for vision.
I typically shoot sports from the vf because it is a lot easier on the back to hold the weight closer to the body, but I do a lot of portrait and product work and then I mostly shoot from the LCD because I prefer to shoot from higher or lower than head height.

There is no advantage to focus one way or the other like there was with an slr.

I believe I match most of the experiences here.

When shooting sports, even with the fully articulating rear screen of my R3, I only use the back screen when shooting high or low angles. Laying on the floor during sporting events isn't often practical, so using the EVF may not be easy to do without being down there.

I do use the rear screen when shooting on a tripod, though. I'm not shooting sports then, of course.

Holding the camera away from your body means that any movement is exaggerated and that could bring motion blur into player sooner than it otherwise may. Its also not as stable of a body position in some cases.
