I'm going to say this will be $11,999. Maybe a touch less. Their supertelephotos with TCs are just a very small premium over Canon's similar supertelephotos without...and Canon's RF 100-300/2.8 is $10,500.
Regardless, I certainly won't be buying one, though I'd sure love to have one.
400 and 600 mm weight went down by 600-700g and gained TC. F mount. 120-300 is 3.2 kg so realistically, I expected 2.5kg. It wont be cheap either .definitely more than 800 PF.
I would think $10000 at least. However, I am perfectly ok if Nikon has a surprise with more weight reduction and lower price but I am not betting on that.

I was thinking of baseline basketball, the TC would be neat when you're on the far side. The TC also would open up a football/soccer field a bit.
I think arena sports: basketball, hockey, swimming, gymnastics, etc. Probably also useful for infield baseball shots, especially at night. I think football and soccer tend to be 70-200/400 2.8 combos plus a wide lens or two.

True but the 400 and 600 were released 5 years ago.
We can safely assume that the 120-300mm f2.8 S TC belongs to a next gen that leverages everything Nikon has developed for their recent lenses. My bet is 2.2 kg.
We should know pretty soon, the first leaked photos were released by Nikon Rumors and the Olympics are starting on 2/6. This lens is a game changer for many winter sports. Many Sony and Canon photographers are going to be jealous…

With 2x TC, would this lens be as sharp as the Sony 300 GM at 600mm?
Maybe not, but any lens used with a 2x is an optical compromise, not to mention slow. One might have the 120-300/2.8 TC and the 400/2.8 TC or 600/4 TC. You want to keep the background clean and separate the subject from other players and spectators.
If these are legitimate images of the lens, its gonna be massive. And massively expensive!
I'm sure it will be an incredible lens, but I'll never own one. Will consider renting one for a few events I photograph every year, sports and concerts in big venues... if the rental fee isn't outrageous...

The F mount 180-400m f4 TC isn't significantly larger than the previous gen 200-400mm f4.
The built-in TC has a very limited impact on bulk and weight for these super tele lenses that are large anyways due to the focal length and light gathering needs. The only thing that has changed is that they can be made lighter than they used to thanks to the usage of lighter materials. But their size hasn't decreased much.

Interesting that this lens basically replace both 120-300/2.8 and 180-400/4 but I am not too hopeful that it will be as sharp
as 180-400/4 at least in the lab but I have been very please with TCx1.4 in general whatever degradation in IQ is.
Hope Nikon will surprise me with the weight of the lens

My guess is that a 200-500mm f4 S TC is coming as well.
Looks like it has the same back half as the 400/600. Should feel right at home with where the focus and function rings are. However that places the zoom ring toward the front of the lens.
Hopefully they managed to keep the weight similar to the Canon.
