Karl, you are so right. Timothy Treadwell made his living video taping bears every summer in my same location and as you said petted the bears, even swam with them and thought he was a bear. Both he and his girlfriend were eaten by a bear and paid the price for not respecting what they are. I actually met his previous girlfriend once while photographing at her alpaca rescue farm . We were in the same location where he was eaten for ten days camping when I took this image. Bruce
Thanks Bob, I also try to respect them and following our guides instructions. He is very experienced and knows how to read their behavior. The sows would actually come to him with their cubs and make them sit near him so he could baby sit them while the mom would go fishing near by. Bruce

he is definitely letting you know that you are in his home turf and had better be careful. looking at you from the corner of his eyes gives a feeling of seriousness to his expression. glad you didn't do anything

Thanks for your wise words, Katmai has many visitors every year with close up encounters being quite common. The bears are mostly aware that you are not a food source and not a threat to them or their cubs, in fact the sows will often bring their cubs to our guide and have him baby sit them to protect them from the boars while she fishes near by. The boars will kill unattended cubs because the females will mate soon after they loose their cubs. Bruce
