p.1 #1 · Canon R50V - Connecting to Focusrite 2i2 and external Mic

Good afternoon to all
I must admit, I am a newbie! I have recently purchased a Canon R50v for Blogging and am running into some 2 minor challenges that I'm hoping some wonderful person might provide some education
1. I am trying to setup an external monitor using an micro HDMI to my monitor. However, I'm seeing that only a few settings on the wheel allow me to see this. Trying to understand what it works for some and not for others.
2. I have a Focusrite 2i2 and a Shure SM7b mic. I have my headphone jack 1/4 to 1/8 into my Canon R50V. However, it tells me that I should set the volume in the camera to 1....which I think I did. However, when I click on record on a few of the settings on teh wheel to record video...its looks like the mic meters are going nuts and my Focusrite is set to 50% which "seems" to be low??
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Parrish

Item 2. I would plug the headphones into the 2i2 for monitoring, not the camera. You won't be using the camera audio—save for guide tracks—since you have the 2i2 running into a DAW and will sync the audio tracks to the video in your video editor. The SM7B needs at least 60db of gain, so your 2i2 preamp should be cranked close to max. The gain knob shows basic levels, so it will be fine as long as the red clip light doesn't come on. Your DAW meters should range from -18dB to -6dB (peaks). It's hard to clip a SM7B on a Scarlett unless you shout...

To answer the first question, I'm not surprised at all you're seeing the meters go crazy.

https://www.shure.com/en-US/insights/whats-the-difference-between-line-and-mic-levels

The cameras port is a "microphone in" so it's expecting signals to be something like -50dBu.
The 2i2 however isn't outputting a microphone level, but rather a "line out" level. Line out is probably 0dBu from the 2i2. All that means is that the signal out of the Scarlett is far stronger than the camera is expecting, and isn't really a great fit.

As Gochugoigi says that audio feed doesn't really need to go to the camera at all. On the camera you could just use the internal mic as a dirty audio feed, which allows you to sync audio / video later. You want to be using the monitor port on the front of the 2i2 because it will put mic audio into your headphones without delay, which makes it tolerable to hear yourself while also talking into the mic.

As a side note, a lot of the time the amp in the 2i2 isn't powerful enough for those types of mics and can use help from a device like a cloudlifter. If you're not seeing the green lights while talking on the 2i2 then you're not getting enough volume into your audio interface. It's going to be noticeable when you get to the computer and playback the feeds.

On other thing that I struggled with for a LONG time with the Scarletts is that in Windows you need to your check your mic in settings. It usually defaults to "stereo" mic in, but you're probably only using a single mic which is "mono". Windows will halve the sound output because it's expecting two mic feeds, and you can struggle getting enough gain. (This is a problem for apps like Zoom, Discord, Teams, etc) If you go fiddle around in the sound menus and change the Mic to mono it will output full volume and also help it sound better. If you're using a DAW and it's going directly into the program, that might be a non issue if the DAW is separating each channel for you.
