p.1 #1 · EVF and screen differences on Z6III

I’m in love with my Nikon Z6iii but one thing that’s bothering me is the fact that the color and contrast shown in the EVF is different than the color and contrast shown on the back screen.

When I looked through the EVF, it looks exactly the way I think it should. But when I then compose on the back screen, the image is more yellow, and is flatter looking.

Is there anything I can do about this? The EVF on this camera is the best one I’ve ever used. The image in the EVF tends to look exactly like the scene in front of me which I love.

It would be helpful if the two were close to the same. Can you adjust under the 'Monitor Color Balance’ menu? Or does that adjust both LCD and EVF simultaneously?

I noticed this early on and was never able to find any kind of setting that made the 2 look similar consistently. I noticed it almost exclusively under artificial lighting and it would always change given the scene which meant adjusting the color tint on either the LCD or EVF was essentially pointless. This is something of an issue in every mirrorless camera but it seems especially pronounced on the Z6III. Sometimes the image in playback would also be slightly different than what I saw on the LCD which was hugely frustrating. IME the image on the LCD was closest to the image I'd get once uploaded.

Thanks guys, it is frustrating.

I don’t know if monitor color balance will change this on both screens or not but I’ll give it a shot.

I also have primarily noticed this an outdoor lighting on this camera. I’ve never noticed this difference on any of the camera, but that’s not to say it wasn’t there, I just didn’t notice it. It seems like it’s definitely pronounced on this.

This is a common complaint of Fuji, and indeed, of the Z6iii specifically: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/threads/nikon-z6iii-color-temp-question.4767631/

I have to assume the "better" EVF of the Z6iii can display a wider gamut than the pretty archaic LCD and that's what you're seeing. Most brands are still using part bin LCDs that haven't caught up to modern tech.

There's a really simple solution here though...just swap it for a Hasselblad

I think you nailed the reason, as google says the Z6III EVF has “a wide color gamut equivalent to the DCI-P3 color space, used in digital cinema. This allows for the display of more vibrant, true-to-life colors, particularly reds, without oversaturation, and is especially beneficial when shooting in HLG tone mode."

That makes a lot of sense to me as to why that would be the case.

Interestingly, the resulting image that is taken (at least the jpeg) looks more like the one on the LCD than in the EVF. That’s disappointing to me because the image in the EVF generally looks so great on this camera.

Is that expected? That the LCD would show the more accurate representation of the JPEG than the EVF?

My guess is the JPEG is probably not tagged with the wide color gamut profile of the new EVF, so it won’t match exactly.

You have me curious to check this issue out, I have a Z6III arriving next week. Apart from it not matching the LCD, how do like the EVF optics, colors, contrast, and resolution on the Z6III? Can you compare it to other Z camera EVF’s you may have used?

I'd be curious to know what you find!

I love the Z6III EVF. My points of comparison are a Zf, a GFX 50S, and some older Sony cameras. I like the Z6III one the best for sure. It just looks...true to life in a way I can't really describe. Like when I look through it, it's as if I'm looking though an optical finder to a certain extent. The colors look great, the resolution is good. Can't really explain it more than that!

In general I don’t particularly care if the EVF or LCD is perfectly accurate, as I’m editing the RAW anyways and the JPEG is a preview of a Nikon picture control that I won’t necessarily use. As long as the EVF is nice to use, that’s all that matters.
