p.1 #1 · Canon R1 Eye Detection Question

Hi,

I'm new to the board and could use some help! I'm trying to set up back button focus using the AE Lock for eye detection on the R1.

When I click on the customize buttons for shooting in the green menu here is what I have set up:

Shutter button half press set to metering start
AF-ON button to AF-ON2 (fully-press metering and AF start)
Detail set to AF Area - 1 point AF
Whole tracking Servo AF OFF

I set the AE Lock Button to Eye Detection AF and when I shoot, it does capture the eye with the blue square. The problem is, it still shows the whole area tracking activated (the icon appears on the top left corner) with the white square all around the edges and the blue square on the eye.

I can't seem to figure out how to remove the whole area detection so I can just focus on the specific player. If anyone has any advice or suggestions, I'm all ears!

Thanks for your help!

- Laura

p.s. I also shut off whole area tracking in the purple AF set.

p.1 #2 · Canon R1 Eye Detection Question

Hi Laura - It’s my understanding that Eye Detection AF also turns on the Whole Area Tracking Servo AF functionality. It’s hard configured that way by Canon so it can’t be altered.

If you want the camera to detect a subject’s eye only under / around your chosen AF area box, then don’t use Eye Detection AF.

Instead, do the following:
1. Disable Whole Area Tracking Servo AF.
2. Under Subject To Detect, select People. This will also tell the camera to detect the eye / face / head when visible.
3. Select the AF Area Mode you want to use (e.g., 1 Point, Expand Area AF, etc.)
4. Take the picture

Give that a go and let me know if it solves the issue.

Short question, If I Turn of eye detection Turn Off the camera will stop for hunting eyes? And it will stay longer in the first subject?
