As I have written many times, the odds of getting a 300mm f2.8 are IMHO null. A 100-300mm f2.8 S TC is way more likely.

A 300mm f2.0 is a possibility, they could probably make one below 3 kg.

I also think that a 100-200mm f2.0 S TC is more likely than a fixed 200mm f2.0 S TC.

Either way these lenses are most probably only a few months away.

Finally why not a 24-70mm f2.0?

Cheers,
Bernard

My thinking on this is that size is a problem. Many Z lenses run large. The 24-70 II is already larger than the FE 24-70/2.8 II and RF 24-70/2.8 and even a bit larger (albeit lighter) than the FE 28-70/2. I do think Nikon needs to compete now that the other two have an f/2 zoom here, but I think it'll be 28 like the others (AND I think it'll still be the largest).

For the same reason, I think your 100-200/2 is optimistic. Although maybe that's a focal length range where size and weight aren't as critical (especially since there aren't competing products to compare against).

The new Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 mkII is the lightest of all the 24-70mm f2.8. It is only larger because Nikon decided to make it a non extending design for video applications.

What is most important about the 24-70mm f2.8 mkII is the least discussed aspect of it, it has only 14 elements compared to 20 in the new Sony. This is a breakthrough in lens design and this is the reason why I think Nikon will be the first company able to come up with a 24-70mm f2.0.

Future will tell.

Cheers,
Bernard

A brain-computer interface from Neuralink so when I look at something the camera points itself at it, focuses, tracks if necessary, and takes an image every time I double blink.

Whoever releases the photovideohat wins it all. What's a photovideohat? I'm glad you asked. This device will completely "trasnform" your photography.

It's a hat you wear, nothing fancy, just an integrated 360° view multi-gigapixel camera filming everything at 120fps with a built-in AI frame analyzer which automatically detects, crops, post-processes, and stores frames with various FOVs and pleasing composition into folders according to pre-defined user prompts. Essentially turning you into a dumb self-propelled moist tripod.

Of course, a typical wearer of a photovideohat will continue to call himself a "photographer".

Consider this comment to be just an arrow, gently pointing you towards the brave new world in which the AI-trained autofocus, 30fps, stacked sensors, and pre-capture/video are gradually taking you to. Will you continue calling it "photography" all the way til the end, or will there be a point eventually where we'll draw the line?
