p.1 #1 · Best speed ring and light for Chimera pancake modifier?
I picked up a medium chimera pancake softbox for video, primarily because I wanted a single source light to hang between two people in an interview situation.
I’m kind of scratching my head on the best way to deploy it though. The rods it comes with do not have the typical circular rods at the end, they are just four rods held together with a central ring. The rods seem a little too narrow to mount properly in the bowens speed rings I have, and it seems like the Chimera quick release speed ring is what it’s intended to be used with.
Before I purchase the chimera speed ring, I was wondering if anyone else has experience using this modifier. I was planning on just using it with one of my lighter Godox 300 watt LED continuous lights, as I’ll be booming it overhead and don’t want something super heavy.

I own the Profoto M Lantern (aka pancake) and you can just suspend it overhead just outside the frame for pleasant illumination with 360-deg spread. Both Profoto and Chimera require a SR and Chimera offers a heap for every light fixture. I use the QRSR (for Profoto heads) on the lantern and my Chimera SB. The QRSR is expensive but makes deployment safe and easy. You can use any standard SR including the cheaper Chimera versions that are plastic (own one, never use it).

Thanks man, I figured out my issue. Looking at this video, I don’t have the thicker tube inserts that he is adding 34 seconds in
Appreciate the light test. Mine looks identical in construction. It has a nice quality of light on the face and the recording studio we’re working out of has similar color walls as yours.
I have an email into Chimera to see if I can purchase the rod insert/extensions separately. In the meantime I’ll just rent or buy an aputure one for this project.

Confirmed with the nice folks at Chimera that it didn’t come with the gold cylinder inserts that attach to the rods, enabling it to mount onto a speed ring.
Will be glad to start using it, as the shade on the aputure 26” is poorly designed in my opinion. It doesn’t have 4 separate flaps like the Chimera

Just updating this thread, Chimera sent me the gold cylinder inserts for my pancake softbox. Works great and significantly lighter than the Aputure lantern.
