I'm looking for something that will fit Canon EF 400mm 2.8 IS II with the hood reversed and the RF adapter, and I'm indifferent whether it's stored with or without body mounted. Body is R5 II.
I can get a think tank "airport security v3" for $200 but I'm hesitant because it seems excessively big and oversized for 400mm, there might be empty space. I think the "airport international v3" would be sufficient but I'd have to buy that retail or get something else entirely.
Just that lens and one body? Sure, the international would work. But if you want to carry another lens or two and a second body, I would recommend the security. I have both, but rarely use the international as I am usually carrying my 400 with at least two other lenses and 3 bodies.
All those above will absolutely fit the lens. Good recommendations.
BUT -- and this is a big one -- if you are hoping to take it on a plane it all depends on the type of jets you are flying on.
Our local airport is tiny and is only serviced by small regional jets and there is a 0% chance my TT Airport Security or International are going in those overheads unless the laws of physics change radically.
So last week I bought the Think Tank Airport Advantage Plus Roller (used).
If you go to the TT website you will find that it is designed for the small jet overheads and accommodates a 400MM 2.8 -- tighly -- but it does. Mine arrives Tuesday. If you can wait that long I'll post here to let how well it practically fits the 400. In the meantime go to the Think Tank webite and see the video they did on the case. It's super helpful.
It is not big enough for carrying all of my core gear that I use on a regular basis. I use Airport Security for that. But I need this small case that fits the 400 for my increasing short hop flights.

Did you end deciding this lens will meet your needs?

For $200 I'd be all over that Airport Security bag.
Just to follow-up on my post above -- I cam confirm thast the Think Tank Airport Advantage Plus roller can accommofate a 400MM 2.8 (Nikon VTZ), two pro bodies (Z9s) and a 24-70MM.
It's very tight -- but it works ... and this fits in the tiny overheads on small regional jets.
I'll end up carrying a couple more lenes in my backpack on the plane, but I'm sure happy the 400 & Friends fit in the roller.

Also, I agree with Scott ... $200 is a steal for a TT Airport Security.

Yea, but the second time he added the line where he agreed with me, so it's all good! !!
We should all have standalone posts saying we agree with you. You could add it to your photography website: "#1 agreed with photographer on FredMiranda.com." I have to believe that'd bring in the clients.
I have the same Canon 400mm f2.8L IS II lens. I have 2 bags for different scenarios:
Think Tank Airport International V3 for assignments in cities, stadiums, road races, etc. The 400mm perfectly fits with R3 and EF adpater. Just be mindful when closing the lap, it's a bit tight.
Lowepro Whistler 450 AW II for outdoor shoots when I have to hike in rough terrains. It will be very heavy since the backpack is already 7lbs itself but it protects the lens well.
