I just returned from a five day family trip to the Caribbean island nation of Dominica (not to be confused with the Dominican Republic). My wife and I took a half-day birding tour, which revealed some beautiful birds. Interestingly, although there was some overlap with birds from mainland Latin America, there were a number of local variants, which made the birdwatching unique.
As a bonus, Dominica is the sperm whale capital of, if not the world, at least the Caribbean. The water reaches depths of 4,000 feet or more less than one mile from shore, which makes it very easy to view the whales. For their part, the whales were quite cooperative, coming to the surface and being as photographable as a large, gray creature mostly submerged gets.
