p.1 #1 · Fuji 16-55mm f2.8 mark ii aperture ring problem
My Fuji 16-55mm f2.8 mark ii has developed a problem whereby when I set the aperture ring to f2.8 it shows as f3.2 on the screen. All other apertures seem to work ok. I can get get f2.8 by setting the ring to A and selecting the appropriate shutter speed and ISO, but no matter what I do, setting the ring in the f2.8 position only shows as f3.2.
The internet seems to think this is a not uncommon problem and is the result of the encoder ring coming loose or faulty. I thought I'd ask here if anyone knows a cure or whether there is something obvious I may be missing before I engage with Fuji about repairs?
I have tried turning the camera on and off and remounting the lens.
Quite dissappointing for a red badge lens that is only months old, has been looked after and has not seen much use. It is also the mark ii version and this also seems to have been a problem with the mark i.

If it is only a few months old, it should still be under warranty, right? It seems like you should contact Fujifilm right away to report the problem and have it repaired/replaced while the warranty is still active.
It s always disappointing when a product, even a good one like this lens, has a problem like this. But it does happen.

Sorry, no. That sounds like purely a hardware issue. Glad it's under warranty but sorry for the hassle.

Thought I'd let people know that i sent the lens to Fuji's Australian repair facility and they fixed it quickly. It took about two weeks, despite their website suggesting 4-6 weeks was normal. I guess it may not have needed replacement parts.

I really love my 16-55II, its become my most used lens for hiking and I've been shocked a few times by the excellent IQ. But the aperature ring feel is pretty crappy, kinda mushy, and can be accidently moved. I assume that the de-click feature is the reason it feels different than any other Fuji lens. I'm curious, since you sent it in, did they possibly fine tune yours or did you have no issues before? I don't know if mine is worse than others.

I'm not sure what they did. It worked fine for several months when I first got it. As soon as the problem developed it would mostly not go to f2.8 when set at f2.8 but would show f3.2. The other apertures were as they should be. Very occasionally it would show f2.8 but was random and not reliable.
I'm guessing they just readjusted the encoder a bit.
I agree it's a stunning lens optically. Way better than the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 that I tried.

Just wanted to add another data point. I had the same issue where after a few months of use, the aperture would get stuck at f3.2 even when the aperture ring was a f2.8 unless I turned the ring very forcefully. I sent it back to Fuji for repair (under warranty) and it returned to me good as new and I haven't had a problem since. The aperture ring is still "mushy" and loose though compared to other Fuji lenses.

Ok, so my lens is broken again. This time it's the little plastic cover near the mount on which the weather resistant sticker is placed. It is cracked near when the screws are. I don't recall dropping the lens or doing anything that would cause the cover to crack. The screws may have been overtightened during the last repair.
It will be interesting to see if Fuii will still repair under warranty.
While I like the optical performance of this lens, I'm prepared to call the build quality a dud and nowhere near what professional build quality should be. The cover that has cracked seems like very flimsy plastic.

Just reporting back that Fuji fixed my lens again under warranty. The turnaround time was very quick, less than a week, which was nice though it was a simple repair.
