Uneven margins printing from LRC. What am I doing wrong?

p.1 #1 · Uneven margins printing from LRC. What am I doing wrong?

I am printing from Lightroom Classic to a Canon 310 printer. I am printing some 4X6 prints. I have the margins set to .25 inch. Each time I print, the left margin is a bit too wide and the right magin is a bit too narrow, as though the image has been shifted slightly to the right.

I can't figure out what I am doing wrong with the settings to cause this to happen.

Any suggestions?

I can think of a few things --
* if your printer has a special carrier that is adjustable for different sizes, make sure it's centered.
* print full-bleed, if that mode is available.

btw, Canon PRO-310, right? Win or Mac?

notes
online Win manual, page 641, describes the printing and non-printing areas (when not using Borderless Printing).
To my eye, the top and bottom borders look equal in the figure in the manual. 4x6 paper is loaded in Portrait orientation, so "top and bottom" are really "left and right."

Thank you for your ideas and the links. Yes, it is the Canon Pro-310. I'm running it from Mac. The guides ae set correctly, and I'm putting the paper in correctly.

I have the feeling that the problem is the way I have the settings in LRC. LRC's printer interface, I find, is very unintuitive and confusing. There are muliple tabs, some of which seem to overlap functions, and their are settings and check boxes which may be items that I have wrongly configured.

I think it is my use of LRC that is at fault rather than anything on the printer.

In LrC, make sure that you have the Format For field set to your printer (the default is 'any printer,' literally!). And, of course, Paper Size to 4x6 [my Epson ET8550 has 4x6 and 4x6 Borderless as choices].

When I selected 4x6, I was able to make the image centered with dimensions of 3.76x5.76. All four side-margins of the print were approx. 0.25 inch.

No matter what I set my wife's Canon MG to, margins were never even.

Hmmm.... I have the image set to 3.5 X 5 and the margins set to .25. I will try 3.76 X 5.76.

Notice GoodEgg said, "All four side-margins of the print were approx. 0.25 inch". It's often not possible to get the margins exact.

A solution you are not looking for, but when all else fails you can try this. You can print a 4x6 print on a larger size of paper and use a guillotine paper cutter to trim the edges the size you want. You can purchase the paper cutters at a very reasonable price.

Yes, thank you. This is what I have been doing. But there should be a way to have the image properly centered on the page without having to trim indiviudal prints!

I actually don't need them to be exact--just the same.

download Canon print and layout its free https://en.canon-cna.com/printers/inkjet/pixma/software/professional-print-layout-software/ and is recommended by Keith Copper , Try that or a trial of Qimage just to figure out if its a software issue.

Canon Professional Print and Layout is actually quite capable. I don't like Lightroom's printing system so I tried CPPL. I ended up with QImage One, which is a bit quirky but excellent.

I am also a user of Qimage , but with last update I can't get out of poster mode and it keeps trying to print same photo even though I only one in que. ahhhhh. Happy holidays.

Thank you for the suggestions. I downloaded CPPL and I like it, got good prints. But LRC has advantages for me if the photos have been edited in LRC because I can so easily make tweaks or changes to the image and reprint it. If I use CPPL for an image that is in LRC, I have to export the image, and then if I want to make any changes go back into LRC, make the changes , and then export again. Extra work and the organization gets messy with multiple versions kicking around in different places.

However, I also edit some images that I have never imported to LRC with DXP PhotoLab 9. I have never had an easy time working with PL's printer interface, so I think I will use CPPL for those freestanding images.

Thank you.

If you're on macOS, you might want to try Print Tool, which costs $39 but can be evaluated for free. It gives complete control of margins and many other things.

See https://www.quadtonerip.com/html/QTRprinttool.html (you will probably have to tidy up this link in your browser).

I have a short tutorial which shows how to print custom sizes here: https://www.kennethleegallery.com/index.php#customSize (you will probably have to tidy up this link in your browser).

If you can print a 10x16 image on an 11x17 sheet of paper, you can certainly make some 4x6 prints... and even "gang run" them together if you like. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gang_run_printing
