p.1 #1 · Processing Apple Raw files from iPhone 17 Pro

Just updated my old phone to the latest 17 Pro and thinking of using it for more serious photography. I want to integrate it into my workflow so that the raw files I want to keep end up in my LRC library alongside the A7CR raw photos from my Sony.

I am trying to figure out two things:

1. How to get the Raw files imported into LRC's library on my Mac Studio for processing there, without them being uploaded to iCloud and/or Photos where I don't want them, and
2. How to keep just JPEG or HEIC versions of the same photos on the phone for sharing and for reference, presumably via the native Photos app, and backed up to iCloud Photos.

It looks complicated if not impossible. I will continue researching but thought to ask here if fellow forum members have been able to integrate apple raw into their overall workflow. How do you solve these problems, are there other problems I have not foreseen, what works for you? Thanks!

I just Airdrop my iphone images to my Macbook Pro and import in LRC after moving them where I want them next to my main Raw files. It's an iPhone 14, so only Heic, no Raw. Not sure if it works the same with Raw, nor how to deal with 2 file types. After Airdrop you could just delete the Raws on the phone of course (and after backup of course!). If Heics insist in being imported with Raws then delete them from the Mac. It's a few steps but not complicated once you've done it a few times. I have a dialog with LRC when I import from the card, so I'm replacing that

I do the same as Mike. Works without problems.
AirDrop will place the files in your Download folder.
After backup I delete them from my iPhone (16 Pro Max).
In my case the files are DNG-files.

p.1 #4 · Processing Apple Raw files from iPhone 17 Pro

Thanks for the feedback Chris and McB.

After a lot of searching, I still cannot find a consistent way to get the Apple RAWS off my iPhone (17 Pro) and into LRC. Apple keeps hiding them, replacing them with HEIFs or JPEGs, or reverting to space saving on whatever device I use. I have tried via cable connect, air drop and Apple Photos on my Mac Studio desk top, all all of them have problems.

The web is full of simple advice but none of it adds up to a reliable way to get the RAWS. The RAWS are in my opinion much better to work with and can deliver some very good results for the right situations. But you have to get them!

I cannot be the only serious photographer in the world who wants to get quality photos off my iPhone. Surely someone on this forum has faced the same challenges? Help!

Air Drop is easy. You can also cloud synch your photos library and pull them from there. Just set iCloud Photo synchronization to max resolution—takes longer to synch but you get full images on both devices.

p.1 #6 · Processing Apple Raw files from iPhone 17 Pro

I just connect the iPhone (15 pro max) via a cable (USB-C) to my Mac Studio and let whichever asks know that the other is a trusted device (when asked). In Photos on the iPhone I check the pictures I want transferred to the Studio and send them. I get .HEIC and .DNG files depending on whether or not I was shooting in raw mode to get the .DNG files.

Actually when I connect these days, Image Capture is what comes up on the Mac Studio and shows the pictures on the iPhone and allows me to "Download All" or select specific images to "Download". It also displays a lot of the metadata in the image as well as the thumbnail of the image, including whether it is HEIC or DNG, size, width, height, location, etc.

Thanks. I hadn't thought of going back to Image Capture. I'll take a look.
The main problem I have is that I shoot in raw but Apple hides it and only transfers the HEICs.

I wind up with DNG files when I have a "raw" file that shows as a DNG in Image Capture and I transfer it to my main picture storage space. Those are now showing as DNG in LrC.

That's not right. Check all your settings.
