I agree, Pixelpuffin. I was surprised that I didn’t love the photos from my EOS R after using a 5D classic. The lack of dynamic range and the center point focusing were handicaps I just worked with.

I’d love canon to do a mirrorless version of the sensor found in the canon 5d and 40d
The colours those cameras gave still to this day give me goose bumps. Just stunningly beautiful colours and tonal range.
A modern mirrorless take on a FF 12mp sensor with peaking and moveable rear screen would for me be the gift of the gods.
I absolutely adore the files from those old canon sensors.
Sorry to disillusion you, but there’s nothing magical about those older sensors. They were great at the time, but current sensors are, at a minimum, equal to them and in most ways are better.
Perhaps what is making you think that older sensors produce better results is the fact that poor older work tends to fade away, leaving us with best of that time. Meanwhile, from contemporary systems you see the full, unfiltered mass of current work, much of which will not stick around that long.
Yes, I used cameras from that era, including a different APS-C camera with the same sensor and a 5D. I have photographs from the 5D that are beautiful, but I also have them from newer cameras and even from other brands.

That’s fair enough, but just doesn’t sit right with me at all, sorry
A few years back I bought a canon 40d for £40. It was described as dusty
Well honestly I almost sent it straight back… but something about it made me look deeper. The card pins looked brand new, the rear screen foil that was dog eared and had fluff stuck to it. I decided to waste no time. Pulled off the foil and sprayed the entire camera with spectacle cleaner, then buffed it furiously, repeated this several times. It was and is 😎 absolutely pristine. Updated the firmware and fitted the 55-250is stm then popped outside and took a snap of next doors plant pot sat atop of their wall. Went back inside and fitted the card into the card reader to view the shots.
Seriously, I’m not kidding the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. The colours… my god the colours… I wanted to swim in them gorgeous sumptuous deep hues of colour. I raced upstairs grabbed my 80d swapped the lens, set the exact same settings and retook the shot.. this was within 20mins of the first shot. The result did not even compare. The picture was flat and extremely sterile looking.
I haven’t used the 40d since that day it arrived. But I fully intend to use it.
There are a few videos online that compare older sensors to modern sensors, the difference is night and day.
I’m assuming it’s not so much the sensors back then but the processors that were used.
The colours and nuances are very different to modern outputs - how could they possibly not be??

You were blown away by the results of a camera a few years ago and then didn’t use it anymore?
As long as we are wishing, I'd like a completely manual, simple, cheap, full-frame (EF) body. One mode: manual. One focus mode: split screen. No burst mode. No metering, either: manual exposure, only. CRAW files only, workable by DPP. Oh, and a small collection of manual focus, non-IS, f/2 or faster primes.
Lovely camera. I also remembered when moving from a 450d to the 7d and wonder what happened. Awful sensor and colours. Then moving to a 6d and I was in awe.

At the time I was using a 7dii and a 5diii for sons football matches. Rattling off 1-2000K a game. I’d then have to go through all of them editing, cropping etc etc - this is whilst working full time too. So, I just didn’t have time to go out taking snaps as every sat/sun I was taking football/pictures (he played for 2 separate teams)
This year is the first year I’ve not done it as hes taking a year off - actually I’ve just realised I’ve been doing it for 10yrs!! Jesus!! Where’s that gone!!
Tbh, after doing that every weekend come rain shine / sleet or snow I’d had enough.
I’ve spent most of this year catching up on diy jobs that I never really got chance to do previously.
However this is why I kept all my stuff. Always knew one day I’d have more time.

Most of that is available on every camera sold today.

I’m still smitten by my 6D 🥰 , I’ve actually got it next to me right now along with a 1div that I’ve just dug out and currently charging the batteries.

Please post some of these mind blowing colour images from your 40d. Should be easy to show us how much better these old sensor are compared with today’s tech. Oh…and try a few shots at iso 16,000 or so.

Yes, except for cheap. But without metering? No, not that again, no no. I got the lenses: ZE!
Yeah for cheap, you'd have to buy and old DSLR. Plenty to choose from. Set it to M and single shot and have at it. I don't get not wanting metering. Do people really want to go back to estimating exposure from a chart or using a light meter? Maybe a carefully placed piece of tape in the viewfinder could fix that. Plenty of cheap manual focus Chinese and Korean lenses out there that probably match the optical quality anyone stuck in the 80's remembers. The hardest part is probably the split focus screen. I know my old 5D had replaceable focus screens, but I don't know if such a screen was available.

Why so vindictive??
I said the colours are gorgeous that is all. Yes modern sensors will no doubt be sharper and 16,000 is but a pipe dream for a 40D.
I forgot to add, the shutter count is just above 1000 🤣👍🏻
The leatherette still has that Matt black finish you get when the camera is new.
I picked up a 50d not long after … £60 S/C is 1800, that’s pretty mintish too. But I don’t like the camera itself. Don’t like the rear interface and if I’m honest I still prefer he JPEG’s from the 40D.
I actually did a simple comparison using my older 400D and 1st gen 7D using EF 200L 2.8 stopped down to F5.6.
Exact same settings, tripod mounted… I could not tell the difference at all. I never compared the 40D to the 7D… I might actually do that…
I’m not a total Luddite, I’ve got a Yungnuo 23/1.4 winging its way to me to try on either R100 or R50. Also just got the Samyang 50mm 1.2 for canon M, I’ll be pairing that with my M6ii in due course.
I enjoy experimenting, seeing what different combinations deliver.

Ok…just post an image that shows off these colours from your old sensors. Forget about challenging the sensors with high iso…use iso 100.
I’ve shot with old and new sensors and I really cannot say the old sensors were better at anything compared to new sensors so I’d like your take on this.

Most certainly. I could buy a $6,000+ R1; it does most things I listed. I am also not buying a $300,000 Lamborghini. The goal was a good, INEXPENSIVE, camera. That has been a pipe dream since my last FX-3 Super 2000 died. Though I really did enjoy my Mamiya 6 IVb. Try finding a new one.

Pick up any cheap used camera…they all have what you need.
