Thanks for the comments, Sporad. Watching these giant tortoises is like looking at creatures from a lost world long gone, making them truly "prehistoric" in feeling and fact.

Can you tell us about the lighting? Spot, overhead, natural?
Natural light. The were in a shade and light condition with the BG in shade. I used some PS adjustments to create mood through highlight/shadow interplay increasing blacks for dark moods, and emphasizing the subjects with selective adjustments.
I use the gradient map adjustment for my B&W conversions, especially when the image shows some strong light contrast.

Also I'd be interested in any post processing techniques used.
Some is already explained above. As said above I use the Gradient Map adjustment for this image.
Here is a good tutorial about the use of the Gradient Map adjustment for B&W conversions.
Sometimes you come upon an image that causes you linger a little longer, and this image did just that. Socrate, your treatment is outstanding...love the b&w and think it is the reason this image made me reflect on these creatures...they look like they are leftovers from the Triassic times. Print large and hang proudly.
Fantastic work!
