Greetings! I was chatting with the good folks over at Kolari about purchasing their full-spectrum converted X100VI, as it seems like an excellent hybrid for many different workflows. I’ve shot a lot of color infrared on Sony and Canon cameras (from Kolari and other sources) but never seen results from a FujiFilm camera other than the X-T4 ES (which is now basically impossible to get).
Has anyone seen images created by a converted X100-series camera? I’m thinking about taking the plunge either way because I can slap a hot mirror on and still have a great tool to use…but I would love to find anyone else who has been on this adventure, if possible. Also wondering whether or not to get the AR coating because I don’t need to worry about swapping lenses…please send help, haha.
No experience with X100-series cameras, but I had an old XT-1 converted by Kolari to 2-spectrum (IR + Visible) several years ago, and I've done a fair bit of both false color IR and pure IR (B&W) photography with it with great results. I did purchase their hot mirror filter so I could switch to conventional visible light photography when needed, which works pretty well. However it does seem to affect the camera's white balance measurement so I always have to tweak color in post to remove a cyan cast.
One of the biggest issues with digital IR is lens hotspots, which make many modern lenses unusable or compromised for IR use (for Fuji that's most wide and wide-to-normal zooms and some primes too), but if Kolari is selling pre-converted X100's I assume that's not an issue. But worth checking the various online hotspot databases to be sure, since the lens is fixed.
My upload and sell membership here lapsed, but I've got some examples on my website here:
Regarding the AR coating I did get it. It's main purpose is to help reduce internal reflections that can produce hotspots, which was useful to me but may or may not be helpful with the fixed 23mm on the X100.
