At a significant distance DOF might cover the range that AF requires for the initial frames.

If you're referring to AF issues with pre-capture, I have not yet seen it. Everything has been correctly focused. But I'm only photographing football players, like linebackers, launching at me off the line of scrimmage. Not birds launching off perches.
Thanks for all the feedback! I just heard back from the event coordinators who say the wildlife (wolves) will probably be pretty distant, but with a big range - anywhere from 100m to 2km.
Based on this thread, it was going to be a decision between the 400/2.8 and the 600/4 and I think this makes the 600/4 (or even the 800/5.6) the right choice. I'll have to deal with atmosphere no matter what at that distance and with being outside - mist, lens fogging, though not worried about ground heat radiation - so lens choice probably doesn't change much there.
Now I'll have to look at one in person to make sure it's really something I can reasonably carry on a plane.
There are a number of previous discussions about super-tele carry-on options across the various boards. Maybe check the current 'safari' discussion, or use that as a search word.
You'll want to decide between a roller case or a backpack, but there are options for both, though the diameter of the 600 can be a bit of a challenge for hard sided rollers (like Pelican, Nanuk, SKB). It will also depend on the aircraft types you fly to get to/from this event as many of the smaller 'commuter' types have limited overhead capacity, or can't accommodate the standard carry-on size. At least if it's US domestic, the major airlines don't have weight restrictions for carry-on (at least the last time I checked) and 22x14x9" seems to be roughly the standard size restriction.
It would probably be best to start a new thread to get more relevant feedback.
