I have a small pile of 30-plus year-old Epson and HP scanners that are no longer supported in Mac OS. Reuse, recycle?
Will the cost of shipping to potential buyers outweigh their imagined value? Are third-party apps like Vuescan able to drive these scanners in a reasonable amount of time? (the last time I tried Vuescan, and entire glacier melted scanning a platenful of photos)
I am using some old scanners and they are great with VueScan in Windows. IDK about MacOS. The functionality far exceeds what the newer software can do in many cases. However, the scan speed would be limited by hardware, like the scanner processor and USB interface if not at least 2.0.
Sorry for the delay. Here are two I know for sure
Epson 3200 Photo (just checked - on hamrick.com site)
Epson Perfection 4990 Photo (just checked - on hamrick.com site)
ok, done:
HP 5370c - on hamrick.com site
(older Epson 3000 turned out to be a printer!)
I'll have to test these on VueScan so I can decide to recycle or re-hom them.
Thank you all for indulging me in my wild goose chase.
The Epson 4990 is still an excellent and versatile scanner. I have used a 4990 with macOS VueScan for years to scan countless prints and film, in B&W and color.
Although I use a Minolta scanner for 35mm film, the 4990 handles my medium and large format film, as well as prints.
